I am hoping to buy the Canon A70 digicam soon. Is this a good buy for $349 with 16MB CF memory included?
What are the pros and cons of this particular model?
Thanks

A70 :-O
OK that's all I had to say.
You gettin a refurbished one? last time i checked the A70 was $450. Anyway its not a entry level camera so only go for it if you are comfortable with advanced features since it requires alot of manual configuaration.
unless you really need 3.2MP (if you are gonna blow up your pics and make posters), i would say go for the A40 (2.1MP) for around $200 which has just about all the features the A70 has. use the cash u save to get a 128MB CF ($40~, trust me, its very useful when you go on trips); a good 1800mAhr set of rechargeable metalhydride batteries and charger (canon A models drain normal alkaline batteries in less than an hour), and other optical accessories like a wideangle/macro lens, filters and other attachments that the A40 is so popular for (probably once you get used to your cam).
A40 and A70 arent entry level cams, but the features are easy to learn and use. its the best you can get for your money if you develop an interest in photography and want to tweak around in manual mode, and/or try all the attachments and gizmos. if you dont, you can put it in auto and still get good worryfree snapshots.
i have an A200, which is an entry level cam of the same series, very satisfying optics. if i were to be given the option of buying a cam for myself today given all the things i want to try out, i’d go for the A40.
couple of threads discussing the A70 on a forum full of A40 lovers, you might find useful info.
oh and just wanted to say, 16MB CF on a 3.2MP cam translates to less than 16 pics unless you shoot in a suboptimum size, which ruins the whole idea of having 3.2MP in the first place.
bottomline is, higher MPs do not equal all good. you lose out on valueable digital film, battery charge, slower speeds to load images into comp, more and slower imagine manipulation on comp to reduce size to mail folks.
ya, i really dont like the idea of cams with greater than 2MP for non-poster purposes. :b
The A70 is great - like all Canon cams. If its a Canon, go for it. As others have said, go for the A40. Its also great - and spend the money on a memory card and extra batteries. You'll need em.
queer, you're such a nerd.
Thanks all
queer, I agree with the MP thingy. I dont think I am gonna make a whole lot of posters out of any of the pics. I think I need to think a bit more about this :--) But at least A40 and A70 have optical zoom, unlike some other cams :--p
The one thing that you have mentioned with Canon A series models (S series as well I guess) ... batteries draining out quickly ... is kinda worrisome. Do metal hydride batteries make a lot of difference?
CBio, as you can see no one even felt like mentioning an A60. What other proof do you need :--p
on my A200, the alkaline cells last for less than 25 shots if i have the LCD display on, never lasted me more than a day or two. when i use my metal hydrides, i get 200+ shots with LCD on, and have lasted for more than 2 months without recharging.
i also carry around a spare set of metal hydrides in the camera case. if you have a rapid charger for them, you can have them charged in less than 2 hrs (you can get batteries and chargers very cheap on ebay).
and who needs optical zoom when i can use my two legs and get closer to the subject. :-P honestly, i miss zoom on my cam very very rarely given that i dont carry a tripod around or shoot kids or other wildlife.
Thanks again queer and salman
