Candidacy of Shahbaz Sharif Rejected.

Mashallah. PML (N) does not want to take part in the elections anyway.

Pakistan rejects candidacy of Sharif’s brother

LAHORE, Pakistan - The candidacy of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s brother was rejected on Saturday because of pending criminal charges against him, Pakistan election authorities said.

Shahbaz Sharif, president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and former chief minister of Punjab province, said he would challenge the rejection in court.

The government presiding officer said Shahbaz Sharif’s bid for candidacy had been turned down after other candidates objected that he was unable to run for office, citing pending charges of murder and default on a bank loan.

In view of the objections raised by other candidates, the nomination papers of Mr Shahbaz Sharif are rejected,” officer Ashtar Abbas said.

Shahbaz had filed his papers to seek office for a constituency in Lahore, the capital of Punjab and stronghold of the Sharif brothers.

Shahbaz with his brother and their industrialist family was sent into exile in 2000, one year after General Pervez Musharraf ousted then-premier Nawaz Sharif from power in a bloodless coup.

The Sharif family returned to Pakistan early this month after seven years in exile.

Government sources said Shahbaz faces criminal charges in an anti-terrorism court for ordering the killing of five people during his 1997-99 tenure as chief minister in Punjab province.

According to prosecutors, police in 1998 killed five students from an Islamic school, or madrassa, on the orders of Shahbaz, who suspected them to be involved in acts of terrorism.

The rejection of Shahbaz’s candidacy came two days after his party along with other parties in the broad-based opposition alliance, the All Parties Democratic Movement, said they would boycott the January 8 general elections.

Re: Candidacy of Shahbaz Sharif Rejected.

It’s all a bit of drama. Shahbaz has until 7th December to lodge an appeal, and it will be interesting to see if he does, especially as his party is supposedly boycotting the elections. Of course if they are serious about the boycott, then he won’t appeal the rejection of his papers will he?

He gave a diplomatic answer yesterday, saying he will lodge an appeal if the party members ask him to.

Re: Candidacy of Shahbaz Sharif Rejected.

NS and SS came to Pakistan with the personal guarantee of Shah Abdullah that they will not take part in Election and so far its going as per script :)

Re: Candidacy of Shahbaz Sharif Rejected.

Let's make Sheikh Saheb PM. How about that?

Re: Candidacy of Shahbaz Sharif Rejected.

His own cheerleaders in the Nation are saying the same things.

Most of the people across the country are still trying to understand the phenomenon of Nawaz Sharif’s return to Pakistan. Did he manage to return after some behind-the scene understanding with the present regime?

Re: Candidacy of Shahbaz Sharif Rejected.

Pak Politics is a joke at times...you are right.

Re: Candidacy of Shahbaz Sharif Rejected.

Will Shahbaz also not appeal the rejection of his papers like his brother, and thereby confirm the PML N's boucott of the elections?
