Canadian Universities - BS Computer Engineering.

Hello folks…ive been thinking of transfering to Canada for sometime now(us study visa expires now).

Im doing my bachelors in Computer Engineering and want to transfer to some good Canadian University just incase my visa doesnt get renewed.

When it comes to north of the border though..i got no idea whats good and whats not.

Ah needs some help from canadian guppies!

Also what are your opinions on the standard of education in Canada as compared to the US.

Salams Maniac

My older brother used to be at Mc Gill and he was studying engineering too. Its a really really good school, academically and socially, there’s tons of Pakis there too  The education level was the same as a good US college. The only prob is the FREEEZZIINNNGGG weather!!

other than that, I would say just check the rankings of the Canadian schools and apply accordingly

Good luck bro :k:

short on time and breath. got an exam soon. will be a probing.

check out www.macleans.com for now. it has Canadian universities' rankings.

will reply in detail later.

Waterloo
U of Tororto
Queens University
Calgary University

These are all good universities that I would recommend. The first two would be my choices. York is also good but dont know if they offer CS. Also remember that it is not only the name of the university that matters but also the location when you are looking to get a job afterwards.

hmcq is spot on.. in term of top two rankings. Waterloo is tops and UToronto is pretty damn good. McGill is one of those allround universities who have a lot of very good programs. It is very much like UToronto except it it is in Quebec which means French, so that might have to be a consideration for you.

also, Waterloo is only co-op so the degree is 5 years versus 4 and you get no summers or anything off unless you take off time by turning off a co-op term or something. That should be a consideration for you as well. Frankly, I'm not even sure if they let international students in engineering 'cause of working restrictions.

Toronto offers the regular program and they're very, very good. The only thing that separates them from Waterloo is perhaps that Waterloo's rep is a bit bigger and better.

Queens is a prestigious school much like Toronto and McGill - big and strong in everything. Engineering isn't their forte though. you will not go wrong with them if you choose to go there.

Another pretty good option is McMaster. It's a very good engineering school too.

I think your question is way too broad. It would help if you told us whta some of your preferences are. Such as are you concerned about desi presence in the uni - then don't come to Waterloo (engineering is few Pakistani - some Indians). If you don't know French then McGill probably is not the place for you. etc etc

Overall, your best bets would be Waterloo or Toronto - two very good but different schools. IF you have any more questions - ask away.

good luck

just reread your post. so my opinion on America vs Canada follows.

Canada is just smaller and more competitive 'cause of lesser opportunities (as in lesser spots). however, from what I hear if you wanted to move down south again after your bachelors, a degree from Waterloo/Toronto/McGill/Queens would only make you look good.

as far as the program is concerned, I don't think it is any coincidence that Waterloo and Toronto regularly face off against top Americans schools in programming contests and more often than not happen to beat their American counterparts quite convincingly.

That really depends on what university you are leaving and where you are headed. My order of preference for top notch schools is probably something like this

MIT-Stanford-Berkeley/princeton/Caltech-Waterloo/UoT/Imperial College London

these are all pretty much top notch everywhere but I wont move from Stanford to U of T in CS. However if you are at Colgate business school and got admitted to York Schlich (sp) business school. Thats a positive move.

So it really depends on what college you are leaving and where you are headed.
