Remember that you have to take an oath when you are honoured with Canadain citizenship. A good pakistani, such as yourself, can't make a false promise right? So think long and hard about your decision.

And I think patriotism is a pseudo plague. Read my earlier response about having allegiances to different countries. If you truly believe that the US/Canada/UK are your home, but also feel an affinity for Pakistan, you'll be more inclined to do proper research on issues that pit the two against each other.

I think it's more like they love the country, but they hate the people who run things and how difficult things have become with the daily living/law and order situation. But then I could be wrong.

I suppose believing chauvinism is a preserve of the West is an expression of patriotism. Loving one's country usually entails hating someone else's. Patriots are idiots for the most part, wherever they're from. Inconvenient truths are incompatible with self-glorification. No better place to see this play out than the politics forum.

The standard line societies at war use to clamp down on critical speech. It's difficult to understand what anyone gets out of such simple-minded loyalties to convention. If everyone thought like you no one would've had the balls to oppose Vietnam, confront national myths, or whistle-blow corruption. The dissenting minority is what holds power accountable, what keeps democratic societies from rotting.
Embedded journalist - proud patriot, not arrogant, happy to toe the majority line.

my family is about to get the canadian nationality but i am against it for some weird reason. my reason is that I don't want to be defined as a canadian pakistani. i'm happy the way i am with my pakistani nationality on my passport. i get the positive reasons which are you will have security and a chance for a better life with a canadian passport but i don't feel that way. argh i don't know how to explain it properly. all i can say is that i want to stay pakistani even though i don't live in pakistan. i don't want to be canadian or anything even remotely canadian pakistani. does this make sense? :|
I moved to canada 7 years ago, and trust me i've started loving Pakistan even more :)
And you always have the option of keeping dual nationality i.e. Pakistani and Canadian. So Enjoy!
