So what are the rates of these when u send stuff to Canada?
e.g. suppose i’m sending an electronics item (non-gift) worth $250 to some Canadian. What will the item finally end up costing them?

depends which province does the person reside to whom u r sending the stuff...e.g. ontario, we have the GST & PST, which are 7% & 8% respectively, whereas Alberta, theres only the 7% GST & no PST...some of the provinces have the HST (15%) in place of both the GST and PST...the territories don't have taxes, period...
so, where exactly r u sending the item? :)
first time when i purchased something from US..i wasn't even aware of it..i thought only s& h was enough...usually sellers don't tell buyers this information..from my experiences it costed my about $20 on $100 canadian..usually $5-$10 are handling charges..some is duty and then some is GST...i don't think that i have ever seen PST being charged.
One thing i liked..one of the seller only wrote $100 value when the product costed be $300 US..probably to save me money at the postal outlet.
You forgot one more, Pakistani Abroad.
When i lived there, Nova Scotia used to have the “BST” - the “Blended Sales Tax” but
people used to call it the “bull $hit tax”. It’s supposed to be like 15%.
Dunno if they still have it there or not, i think they do, because in the 2003 elections, various politicians were pledging to repeal it. They have been pledging that since time immemorial but no one has ever actually done it yet.
Thanks for the responses guys.. destination is Saskatchewan.. how much do u think would be the taxes there?
How does it work btw.. does Canada Post drop you a post card that u have an item waiting for you to pickup and then collect the taxes etc themself?
^^ PA, expect to pay 7% GST and 7% PST for Saskatchewan...
as for Canada posts delivery system, it depends on how big the package is...if it can be carried in hand from one home to another on the mail carriers delivery route, it will be delivered directly...if its a bigger package that can't be carried/fit in the standard bag given to the mail carriers with all the other mail that has to be delivered, then a post card is dropped off in the persons mailbox, which specifies where can they go and pick up the package (usually the closest/local postal outlet for the area)..just to give u an idea, cards, CDs, 2 video cassette packages, small books, and shirts, i've received at home directly...anythin bigger than that/not as flexible in terms of the space it needs, i have had to collect from the postal outlet...
Qrius: PST is charged on most items that are shipped in provinces which have the PST...most of the web-sites that can ship stuff off also specify that...
Nadia_H: BST = HST i believe...Blended Sales Tax = Harmonized Sales Tax...its just the GST and PST combined together :)
hope that helps PA!
that’s a huge help DM.. u da man :k:
