Canadian city may ban idling

http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/12/a-battle-over-drive-through-idling/

And high time. The city is trying to stop Tim Horton from building more drive throughs. And may require cars in drive throughs to turn off the engine. Or just park their cars in lot and go inside.

Tim Horton funded a study that found (with a wink and a nod ) that drive throughs were actually MORE environmentally friendly than parking the car and going in. How? Cause it takes more distance to drive in the lot and park ur car.

The study also had a footnote that those who believed this wouod be sold a bridge.

Them Canadians! They should just stick to ice hockey.

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

What did Tim Hortons do to you that convinced you to dig up a 6 years old blog post?

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

when..it appeared into my news feed..I deciphered it as Idli- ing ... thought it was something about idlies... awww ...sambhar.. ohhh.. dosa(masala).. :(

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

Didn't know it was 6 years old. Was doing search on idling and associated emissions. And sneaky Tim showed up.

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

News feed? Still thinking food?

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

I think that was the time Canadians really had nothing to do… and then immigrants advent.

And I agree, Kanadians should better stick up to hockey :phati:

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

mouth watering

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

Goes to show how smart the Canadians are. If this is 6 year old news, they were really ahead of the curve. The city in question - I forget the name - challenged the study ' s credibility.

In other news, Starbucks recently announced they are going to increase drive throughs.

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

Special thank to jeans for agreeing to provide link to Starbucks story via her Idli feed

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

.....

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

^ did the sentence run away at > 15 min/mile pace?

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

So...u guys debating on idling...any fayda... I personally think drive throughs are better....

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

Please tell us why.

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

First...you tell me what u have got against drive thrus...

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

You can do a Google search. Off the top of my head here are some reasons

1) with current generation cars and batteries, the old reason that the starter or battery will go bad if you use it too many times not valid. As some argue it takes fuel to start cars. Studies have shown in 10 sec of idling the fuel consumed is enough to start the car.

2) During idling, the car is stationary. While it CONSUMES fuel. And emits CO2 and other r gases.

3) there is a reason people don't idle their cars in a closed garage.

4) the car gets 0 mpg while idling.

5) you can find precise numbers on how many miles one can drive for one hour idling (if someone idles even 10 min per day they idle one hour per week.

6) The rich won't get affected - they are in ac cars with air cleaning system etc. The poor have to breathe the noxious fumes. Some live on roadsides. This is the air they breathe.

Your turn. Please state why idling is NOT bad for the environment and ones health.

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

Not to mention idling emits greenhouse gases - adds to climate channge.

The max temp in India was 140 F. In middle east it soar to 160F

The rich didn't feel it. They r in their comfortable AC.

Idling is worse than pouring clean water down the sink. Because it not only wastes full - which require resources to produce - but converts it to greenhouse gases. At least water does not get magically converted to pollutant t once it is wasted down the sink.

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

If one is living in India all one has to do is look around. And see how the big city cars are destroying lives of the poor. Go to any street intersection and see the vehicles spewing emissions while idling.

Makes no sense.

Of course the west invented drive throughs. And the middle and upper class in India will lap that up also.

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

Ohho…I didn’t said…that…I am against environment.. :smack:
And where the hell is that comment…

..totally not against environment…And do agree with not idling…u r losing me… Okeyyyy…
In for what u said… Just had something else in mind…not much difference…

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

You asked me what I have against drive throughs. Well, drive throughs means cat idle on an average of 5 min. Rest should be obvious.

Re: Canadian city may ban idling

Don't let Saeed know you are an advocate for drive throughs.

He will need few more Saridons.
