I have a question, as an american citizen going to canada(without a passport), what do you need to enter the country?
Probably does not belong in this forum but all you need is your american citizenship I.D. or green card to enter canada (for visit). You don't need an american passport.
You do need to have either green card + your passport if you are not a USA citizen. or some other proof of your legual residency in the USA. The voter registration use to be good if you want to enter in the usa..but not sure if it still works or not....

Take your birth certificate (if born here), your citizenship certificate.
I wouldn't advice you to gamble with INS folks at the border without any concrete evidence of your legal status in the US of A. Do not rely on your Driver's license to get you in and out of US. It works for Caucsians and African Americans but someone who gives a slight hint of not being the "native"??, I don't think so! Not sure about you but all the folks I know don't pass as "natives" and look very much from the Indian subcontinent, hence they have to show their respective documents every single time.
Bottom line: If you're eligible for Passport then GET ONE!!! otherwise, have your birth certificate (US born ofcourse) or greencard or visa handy for the gentlemen at the checking post.

This is a very serious issue.
I know of someone that entered Canada but was unable to return...and as a result of his efforts was barred from entering for 10 years.
He then entered into a major legal battle that took no less than 2 years to resolve. He now has permission to re-enter as a visitor only. I doubt that he would be able to apply for a Green Card ever.
Don't gamble. Get the facts straight before you make any attempts.

ghalib and naeem, not born here guys but I was naturalized an American citizen like 4 years ago but never bothered to get a passport and yes I am still lazy and haven't done it yet (i've got the form and pic filled out) and i'm sure your right, my skin is not that 'American', maybe if I tell them its the florida sun, they'll think i just have a dark tan:)...anyways, thats besides the point because I can get rush service for a lil extra but if I don't need to, I'd rather not so if anyone has hopped the border with with soley their naturalization papers, give me some easy of mind and tell me its legit...
Muzna, I also know of a family here who cannot go back to Pakistan because of some paper problems and they won't be able to reenter until their papers are processed or something...
