Can you wear a saree?

Can you wrap your own saree from scratch or do you have the pleats titched from a tailor?
Fortunately I am able to wrap my own saree and do it rather well with the help of 2 safety pins. I was shown how to wear a saree perfectly by my indian friend, she told me that the saree worn properly , ie pleting it yourself makes the saree look far more elegant and indian women would not wear it any other way. This has stuck in my head ever since I I have helped many cousins and female relatives asking me to assist with their sarees.

I do pin with safety pin once the pleats are pleated to my satisfaction and have seen sarees with stitched pleats that are oroned … Aarrgghh looks awful!!! Oh and feet showing under the saree is a big no no!!!
How aboutyou, how do you wear yours?

Re: Can you wear a saree?

Well I can wear it both the ways but I mostly try to get it stitched by my tailor. Also it depends on stitching.... A good tailor will not give you any chances of complaint.. :D

Re: Can you wear a saree?

I'd love to pleat it myself but that's always a disaster.

I always have my pleats stitched.

Re: Can you wear a saree?

I have em stitched. for me just folding them isnt' an option because no one in my family wears them and I don't have anyone around me who can help fix them. so....that's just what works for me.

Re: Can you wear a saree?

I’ve never worn a saree :naak:

Re: Can you wear a saree?

I bought saree on my sister's wedding but I never wore it.

Re: Can you wear a saree?

I've just bought my first saree and I've had it all stitched by a tailor. Don't know what I would do otherwise as no one in my family wears them

Re: Can you wear a saree?

I prefer to pleat it myself, but I have a couple that are stitched. I use TONS (actually 5-6) of pins to make sure that it stays in place and I don't have to worry about the saree coming apart while I'm walking around.

Re: Can you wear a saree?

Depends on the fabric. I used to be able to drape my mom's sarees quite easily. None of them have stitched pleats, and i didn't use any safety pins either. The fabric that we get now can hardly be managed without stitched pleats

Re: Can you wear a saree?

I prefer to pleat myself because this allows the freedom of wearing it in different styles.......
just a couple of pins are fine.

Re: Can you wear a saree?

I get them stitched by the tailor. Spending so much time over something is a big no no for me. Also, no one was ever able to guess (even the big sari wearers) whether the sari was pleated by me or pre stitched.
