DHC also sells a powerful retinol cream that I love, called "Retino-A Essence". It's pricey, but it works wonders, especially when used in conjunction with some of the brand's other products. I know you're searching for Retin-A, but I've tried that stuff and it can be very harsh on your skin.

Roxx wat is DHC?
i do agree that retin A is strong if u havn’t tried b4 always go with .25%. also the gel is stronger than the cream. ADC(Allday…) also carry retin A micro.

DHC is short for "Direct Home Cosmetics", if I'm not mistaken. It's a Japanese brand that sells a variety of skincare and cosmetic items. I swear by DHC's Retino-A cream as it's not only a retinol treatment but an emollient moisturizer as well. It's far less harsh than tretinoin cream (which you can't normally obtain in the states without a prescription anyway) and can be used in conjunction with other treatments such as IPL (which tretinoin really can't). The only downside is that it's VERY pricey, especially for the tiny amount you get. That said, a little goes a long way.
Thank you Mabrook and Roxx
for both of ya ![]()
OK, so I decided against Retin-A for the reason you guys mentioned that it’s quite potent. So, retinol is the way to go? I looked up DHC website and the product looks quite good to me.
Have you guys ever used Skinceuticals Retinol? I read many very positive reviews for the product on makeupalley.com. But it’s really pricey. A little bottle comes for $56 US and they don’t ship to Canada ![]()
So the question now is whether should I go for generic retinol cream/gel or some high-end brand one?
Hmmm… Can’t say, really; the only retinol product I’ve ever used is DHC’s and I’d quite happy with it. Maybe you could find out which drugstore brands sell retinol based products and then vet the different products base on Makeupalley reviews.
It might help if you told us what you’re using the product to treat. Acne? Hyper-pigmentation? Signs of aging? Dullness?
Re: Can you buy Retin-A online?
think u should atleast giv retin A a try. start with 0.25%. use once a day 2-3 times a week. then slowly move to alternate days. if still good use 1X daily. u can mix it with ur moisturizer intially too. retinol is inferior to retin A n for the price u'll be paying i don't find it worth.
another option is rose hip seed oil with natural tretinoin in it.
and as Roxx said it depends on ur skin goals.
PS: i'll chk Neostrata's retinol cream. it's almost same price, strength and amount as Skinceutical plus a trusted company. Other company to try is La Roche Posay with ) 0.6% retinol. Also some ladies on another forum uses Green Cream(with retinol) and are very happy with it(another option)

Hey, I never knew Neostrata had a retinol cream. Will definitely check it out. And yeah, what's this Green Cream? I read about it too a couple of days ago. Is it like a concoction of a handful of organic natural products?

Roxx, my most major concern right at the moment is hyper-pigmentation/acne marks. Also, I'd like to deal with acne too. Although my severe acne is treated AH with Accutane, I still do get one or two zits here and there and I'd rather they are gone for good for ever as they appear just around any major events. SO ANNOYING!

If you're already taking isotretinoin, I would hesitate to suggest you also use a tretinoin cream (or even a retinol product) without first consulting your dermatologist. With Accutane, you can't even have laser or IPL treatments so those are also out of the question. If you get only 1 or 2 zits I'd stick with OTC treatments containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, or even something like Zeno or Thermaclear, provided your dermatologist okays it first.
I use Retinol from Skinceuticals. Chanda_kh recommened into me and so far I really like it. They have .5 and 1.0 concentration. Needless to say, you have to start with the lower concentration. I got the .5 and used it for about 5 months and then moved to 1.0. I thought my skin would be okay with it but I feel with the 1.0 I get atleast a medium peel..my skin peels off like crazy but the the 7th day I am fine and the skin has a glow. If you are looking to lighten acne scars and hyperpigmentation…You can use it in conjunction with Obagi’s Blender which has 4% hydroquinone. Please make sure you wear suncreen of spf 30 or above though!
If you want avoid using hyrdq…try looking into this Cellnique’s Derma Brightener Cellnique. This product and the ingredients looks so promising!! I ll def. be looking into it when I have more cash-e! lol good luck
Re: Can you buy Retin-A online?
Roxx, I was put on Accutane for the first six months of last year. I did read that one must not use any topical Vitamin A treatments or go for any peeling products/techniques at least after 6 months of being off the Accutane and I think I should be OK now, yeah?
PSB, your profile suggests that you are somewhere in Canada and I wanted to ask you how do you get Skinceuticals Retinol here? I live in Toronto and I wanted to buy it off their website but it said that they don't ship to Canada. Is buying off Amazon/Ebay safe for any such things that you are gonna be used on your face?
Also, wanted to ask you guys about the SPF. Which sunscreen do you use? I just bought Cliniderm SPF 45 skin lotion. It gives me this strange pinkish tint for some reason. Used Shiseido but it left me looking like a pale ghost.

If your Derm has given you the all clear, then I guess it should be fine.

I have sensitive skin so I use sunscreens that contain physical UV blockers (namely: Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide) such as Blue Lizard brand sunblock; sunscreen with physical UV blockers doesn't irritate skin the way sunscreen containing chemical UV-blockers does, but it can also cause breakouts for folks who are prone to them. Also, the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (even when "micronized") tend to leave a white, ashy cast on the skin.
Chemical UV-blocker based sunscreens don't usually have the above problems, but can often be far more irritating to the skin than the physical-blocker variety.
