As Woolmer pointed out that Pakistan can win without the services Shoaib and Asif. It will be hard to digest his statement but after analyzing the last 50 ODI matches under the leadership of Inzamam-ul-Haq, the results are not poles apart.
-------------Total ----- With Asif -------- With Shoaib -----------With Asif and Shoaib------------- Without Asif and Shoaib
Lose -------20 ---------9-------------------5-------------------------- 1---------------------- ----------------------6
Win-------- 28--------- 10----------------- 13----------------------- 2 -------------------------------------------10
Win %----- 0.58 -----0.53--------------- 0.72--------------------- 0.67----------------------------- --------0.63
But I agree with the fact that combination of Pakistan and Bob Woolmer does not produce extraordinary show.
Agreed
There being two reasons.
- first our fielding is the worst in the world. We probably concede 30-40 extra runs in every game. SA on the otherhand prevent 30-40 runs in the field. So against good fielding sides like SA and NewZealand we are 60-80 runs behind even before a ball being bowled
- second (and most important) our unpredictable batting. Unless we put runs on the board and by that I mean consistent scores of 270+, no matter how good our bowling attack we cannot win. With Pakistan there's always the worry at the back of your minds (and most teams know that) that we can get bowled out for less than 150 under pressure on a given day.
Pakistan has millions of bowlers who are playing as unknown players in Muhallah teams, with little bit of Polish ... those bowlers can be even better than Asif & Shoaib or anyone else.
Our fielding is worst than under 10 Australian teams (yes under 10 not under 19). Younis Khan is most unpredictable batsman, we are basically relying on Muhammad Yousuf & Inzamam .... rest are like rotten Aaloo Bukharay ... look fine until you hold them to eat & realise they are too soft to eat.

Well, technically, without a ball being bowled, Pak can't concede those extra 30-40 runs and SA can't stop those 30-40 runs ;)
There is only one way for us to win. That is if Shoaib comes back, is fit throughout, at his best and rips through top orders consistently. However, winning the lottery is a safer bet.
We can not just relay on Asif and Shoaib. We don't know how other teams are in best form and fully set. Like India, Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand (for sure), England (for sure), South Africa (Need I to say anything), Australia (Wow). Asif and Shoaib are not enough, however they are great asset to Pakistan.
