Usually, you can get a sense of what a person is like after talking to them online for a while. Like any friendship, real life vs. online, people tend to open up and start letting the other person closer and trust them more, and of course, it's give and take like any friendship. At least that's how it is for me. I have quite a few online friends here on GS who I tell pretty much everything to and so far, I have no regrets. :p
There's only been one time where I trusted someone online who turned out to be a freak; but I was warned about this person beforehand so I guess I had it coming.

Yes, I have met some people on-line that I have been friends with now for about 4 years. I met and stayed friends with a lady in Upper State NY for about 6 years until she passed away from Parkinson's this past Fall.
I would say, don't trust anyone fully until you meet and can judge for yourself in real time how a person is.
I have met some people that I have like On-line but were not the same face-to-face.
Use your judgement as you would in any situation meeting people and it is better to judge on-line over time. People who are living an illusion can't keep it up over time, it shows here and there.

Yup, use your judgement ... and believe me, it takes time to build trust especially online.

Well, after my first husband passed away and I was single again, I did meet a man that I had e-mailed with on-line for about 6 months. Since he was a potential person I might date, I got his info first, verified employment and address, and took my brother (a Special Ops Army guy, 6'4" big boy) to the meet with me.
It went well, we went on 2 dates and decided nothing romantic, but became friends. That was a number of years ago and since, I have gotten married and recently my husband and I were invited to and attended his marriage.
With meeting men, it takes more care, a lot more, you don't want to get hurt.

I would never meet someone from on-line, I met Madhanee and Matsui and they have corrupted me, these bastrats, oh and also uncle CM. They all come across as nice guys but they are the biggest proliferaters of hate, alcohol. I mean now I am drunk all the time.
