can "third world" prevent a "water world"?

Its all of our planet, but look whats being done to it. Experts are predicitng global warming, which is going to quite literaly alter the face of our planet. Species are being made extinct because of it. See the article here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16922234/ (i am also cut and pasting below).

And how does everyone feel about this. It makes me sooooo sad, and angry to see this? does this piss anyone else off…the fact that a handful of western countries are destrying the planet that belongs to all of us…for what thier god dam*ed nike shoes!!! thier stupid gap T-shirts!!! and why are we not screaming mad about this!!!

Where is our ANA!! it our planet too!!! these are our species too!!! our trees, our air, our rivers, and our trees!!!

What good are a few peace prizes for physicits when that research is used to make weapons capable of detroying innocent species and cultures, what good is an industrial revolution when it comes at the expense of our planet!

no really where is our ANA!! Why are we not screaming mad about the desertification of Africa, or the air pollution in Asia, or hte wiping out of innocent animals!!! why are we not angry..and having these conferences in our countries..who cares for western “accomplishments” when there is clearly a lack of responsibility on the part of the west that should accompany such “advancements”

so in light of that, what is our responsiblity as citizens of third world, as Muslims to ensure that we don’t take the planet down this path of destruction. Knowing what we know of the west and its “accomplishments” do we follow course, or do we have an obligation to find our own path and not veer down this dirty road.

Don’t get me wrong the west has a lot to offer, but that history is as ladden with accomplishments, as it with the horrors of extinct species, burnt rain-forests, ethnic cleansing, genocide, war, building of mass weapons. I am just afraid that this rush, of third world countries to “westernize” is going to take us all on this planet down the road that ends in doomsday. I really hope that as Muslims, as citizens of hte third world, as cultures with eastern values, where we still respect our elders, our ancestors, nature, and still hold things sacrosanct, I hope that we can envision a better tommorow and realize that westernization should not be our notions of modernization.

PS! when i say west - i mean european culture.

Climate talks in Paris include debate over how to describe possible sea level rise over the next century. A key factor is what might happen to land-based glaciers and ice sheets, like this river of glacial ice flowing through part of the Trans-Antarctic Mountain Range on Antarctica.

PARIS - The world’s leading climate scientists, in their most powerful language ever used on the issue, said global warming is “very likely” man-made, according to a new report obtained Friday by The Associated Press.
The report provides what may be cold comfort in slightly reduced projections on rising temperatures and sea levels by the year 2100. But it is tempered by a flat pronouncement that global warming is essentially a runaway train that cannot be stopped for centuries.
“The observed widespread warming of the atmosphere and ocean, together with ice-mass loss, support the conclusion that it is extremely unlikely that global climate change of the past 50 years can be explained without external forcing, and very likely that is not due to known natural causes alone,” said the 20-page report.
Story continues below ↓ advertisement ad_dap(250,300,‘&PG=NBCMI5&AP=1089’);

Human-caused warming and rises in sea-level “would continue for centuries” because the process has already started, “even if greenhouse gas concentrations were to be stabilized,” said the 20-page report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
The report by a group of hundreds of scientists and representatives of 113 governments contains the most authoritative science on the issue. It was due for official release later Friday morning in Paris.
The phrase “very likely” translates to a more than 90 percent certainty that global warming is caused by man.
What that means in layman’s language is “we have this nailed,” said top U.S. climate scientist Jerry Mahlman, who originated the percentage system.
It marked an escalation from the panel’s last report in 2001, which said warming was “likely” caused by human activity. There had been speculation that the participants might try to up the ante to “virtually certain” man causes global warming, which translates to 99 percent chance.
Sea levels expected to rise
On sea levels, the report projects rises of 7-23 inches by the end of the century. That could be augmented by an additional 4-8 inches if recent surprising polar ice sheet melt continues.
The 2001 report projected a sea level rise of up to 35 inches.
Many scientists had warned that this was being too cautious and said sea level rise could be closer to 3 to 5 feet because of ice sheet melt.

But despite losing on that battle, scientists said the report is strong.
“There’s no question that the powerful language is intimately linked to the more powerful science,” said one of the study’s many co-authors, Andrew Weaver of the University of Victoria, who spoke by phone from Canada. He said the report was based on science that is rock-solid, peer-reviewed, conservative and consensus.

“It’s very conservative. Scientists by their nature are skeptics.”
The scientists wrote the report, based on years of peer-reviewed research; government officials edited it with an eye toward the required unanimous approval by world governments.
In the end, there was little debate on the strength of the wording about human activity most likely to blame.
“That is a big move. I hope it is a powerful statement,” said Jan Pretel, head of the department of climate change at the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute.
The panel quickly agreed Thursday on two of the most contentious issues: attributing global warming to man-made burning of fossil fuels and connecting it to a recent increase in stronger hurricanes. Negotiations over a final third difficult issue — how much sea level rise is predicted by 2100 — went into the night Thursday with a deadline approaching for the report.

Re: can “third world” prevent a “water world”?

Asian countries (China & India) contribute to global warming too.

If enviromental issues interest you, check out ‘Global dimming’ I saw a documentary, here is a summary.

Global Dimming
Even though if green house gases are curbed, the soot particals such as the ones left behind aeroplanes and industry collect in clouds, which reflect sun light, thus slowing down the rate of water evapuration the implications of which are huge, this also has had a big effect on the African monsoon, the drought in and around Ethiopia during the eighties was considered an effect of this (according to the documentery), similar can happen to the asian monsoon, however unlike Africa, where millions were effected, Asia is much more densely poulated and could effect billions of people.

Re: can "third world" prevent a "water world"?

I think this global warming is irrerversible(atleast in coming years or decades to come).

Re: can "third world" prevent a "water world"?

global warming is already having negative effects in our area, for example the galciers (baltoro, siachen etc) are melting at alraming rates,

Re: can "third world" prevent a "water world"?

by 2050, the sea level would have risen and many areas would be under water

this will cause great human migrations, wars, disease, etc....

I guess this is nature's way of keeping the global population in check

Re: can "third world" prevent a "water world"?

SLIM MO - that kinda what i mean, well china is up there with the US! but alot alot of industries from the US are moving down to China, so I wonder about these industries in China, I wonder how many of these are actually owned by either US or European/ AUstralian corporations.
And thats what i mean - China and to some extent India are xamples of how we need to sorta find our own path, and not rush to westernize, and industrilize ourselves, and destroy and deplete our natural resources. Its a shame whats happening in Africa and the Mid--East, techinically they dont even have control over their natural resources, i mean even if they wanted to respect thier land, they are not able b/c thier resources are being exploited by foriegn investors/ war mongers.

Even in South America, Brazi is totally going through its rainforest so fast, its really scary. but really its not the natives of those lands have a say. They are not catering to their indigenous ppl's interests but rather, most likely to foriegn, or even i suppose thier own domestic, corporate interests.

I think as third world nations, we should take a stand, demand that our planet!!! and it is all of our planet...it doesnt belong just to the rich or powerful, we should all take it back!!!

it does not have to be this way. we dont have to end up in a waterworld with disease and war all around us. We can share, and be responsible and we can all enjoy this planet, and treasure all its resources, happily.

Whats specially pissing me off is this arse corporations who are now attempting to take over the ice caps in the north and south poles!!! who the hell are they! those caps out in the water - thats high seas....right? anyone anyone? well if it is high seas they belog to all of us! they cant just come over and take them!!

U know i think pakistan should give up its nukes! remove itself from politics, pretend to be like switzerland, and really just go back to growing food naturally for its ppl, and disengage from world politics and power grubbing!!

we could be the best country in the world. we could have organic food, our children will be healthy. we will live peaceably, everyone would be welcome, so long as they abide by our laws. It could be great....so pass the idea along to the prez...... :D

Re: can "third world" prevent a "water world"?

I dont agree. Pollution is an unwnted outcome of industriliazation, but remember, countries cannot become 'developed' without industrilazing. Alot of the western nations have already polluted there fair share of our planet in the 18th and 19th centuries when they went through rapid industrilazaition. Now that th eso called 'third world' is rapidly indutsrilazing, these western nations(european mostly, not so much america) are now jumping and saying 'oh care for the planet, bla bla bla, you third world countries are causing pollution etc etc' after they polluted the planet, and now that most o fthe manufacuturing processes have moved to the developing world, they are coming on our steps sayign to stop polluting etc etc. Industrilazaition is NEEDED for a country to develop.

Re: can "third world" prevent a "water world"?

no its not!!! thats the thing, we - mostly you! - are not able to look beyond "westernization" as modernization!!!

but we can modernize "develop" w/out having to westernize! in other words we dont have to go the route these nations did! we can be soooo much better!

let the damned polluting industries stay in europe even china! - we should focus on preserving and ameliorating our precious natural resources!!! sriously thats where its at! whole foods - organiz everything - is taking over the US! its all about trees, and fresh air over here! so believe me the future is all about natural, going back to nature!!! and here we are decades decades behind, now catching up and instead of realizing that hell! we are actually a bit ahead of the game in that regard we are throwing it away b/c we need to be west's tail...we need to folow them around! instead of making our own future and our own path!!!

well i hope the Muslim world, and the east wakes up realizes what they have going for themselves and decides to make and follow its own course rather then being the "thum" of the west!!

Re: can "third world" prevent a "water world"?

Dont put words in my mouth, I never used the word 'westernization' i said Industriliazation, which is COMPLETLY different from westernization.
I will stand by my words, industrliazation is ABSOLUTELY necesary for economic growth, westernization is NOT.

Re: can "third world" prevent a "water world"?

Child, most industries have moved out of Europe(western Europe atleast) to the developing world. And there is no need to lecture me on nature etc etc, I come from Northern Kashmir(northern areas to you)

Re: can "third world" prevent a "water world"?

Yup, I agree, Global warming is already here, all man can do is to try and slow this down before we get to the 'tipping point.' The time taken for global warming to come into effect has been far shorter then for this effect to reverse which it eventually does, takes thousands off years.
I heard Scientists are researching if recent increase in sizemic activety maybe attributed to Global warming, the results either way will be facinating.
