in islam tattoos are haram…true or false, can some1 please explain why they are haram or why they are not haram.i am just not good at explaing…n some people need to know this.
*New Muslim’s Question: This brother became Muslim just 4 weeks back, and he asked me what should he do about the Tattoos on his body? What is the Islamic ruling on it? Presently, he is attending weekly Islamic classes to learn about the fundamentals. I would greatly appreciate your reply. (question by Jason, now Abdul Karim) *
*Tattoos permanently disfigure the body and it is Haram to have tattooing done to one’s face or body. The Prophet -peace be upon him- said that Allah curses the tattooer and one who is tattooed. Ask the new Muslim to have the tattoos removed from his body, if possible. However, if it is not possible or if it will harm his body too much or will cost him too much, then he can leave them. Allah does not put a burden on a person beyond his capacity. (al-Baqarah 2:286). Since he did this before accepting Islam, his sin will be forgiven. The Prophet -peace be upon him- said, “Islam demolishes (the sins of) whatever done before it.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith no. 173) *
The Prophet is reported by Abu Huraira, to have said, "The effect of an evil eye is a fact." And he prohibited tattooing . Volume 7, Book 71, Number 636: It is not difficult to see that tattoos are useless and frivolous, and that the motives behind them, to draw attention to oneself or to decorate oneself, thereby, increasing one's illusory worth rather than real worth, can hardly be regarded as virtuous. So those people who go by an understanding of the general instructions of the Quran, tattoos may be regarded as forbidden. But for those people who have a literal and legalistic mind and wish to confine themselves to explicitly state instructions, tattoos are not forbidden in the Quran.
I read the Quran and did not see anything in reference to tattoos. Is it wrong for a Muslim to get a tattoo?
Although the Glorious Quran is silent about the issue of ‘tattoos’, the Messenger of Allah (saws) specifically forbade and invoked the curse of Allah on the people who applied the tattoo and the ones who had the tattoo applied.

“Islam denounces excesses in beautifying oneself when it alters the physical features that Allah created him with. The Glorious Qur'an considers such alterations as inspired by Satan, who "...will command them (his devotees) to change what Allah has created...” (An-Nisaa': 119) Tattooing is one of those excesses. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, is reported to have cursed the tattooer and the tattooed. (Reported by Muslim) Tattooing permanently disfigures the face and other parts of the body with colored pigment and repulsive designs. Some Arabs, especially women, are in the habit of tattooing large areas of their bodies. People of certain religious sects tattoo pictures of their deities or religious rituals on their hands and chests. The pain and agony that the person experiences from the needles piercing skin add to these images. Because of all of this, both the tattooer and the one who is tattooed have been cursed.”
Allah Almighty knows best.

thanks for sharing, I always did and still do think the occasional small tatoo can be cool looking.
if it is Haraam though, i suppose i can always use those temporary stick on tatoos :)
Please don't take offense but isn't using a pretty icon like a pink or red rose to go along with a feminine user name drawing attention to yourself? Especially when talking to Bemharam's on the net?

sooooooo........... n ur point iz??????????????????
Many times this topic has been discussed. I haven’t changed my views on this:
Ok, if a woman has her belly button pierced or a tattoo on her butt, but she is a Muslim & so covers herself up ‘modestly’ or in the ‘islamic way’ … do you think anyone would notice those other than her ‘mahram’? And what’s wrong with that?
It all depends of intention or ‘niyat’
Woman are allowed and encouraged to look good & be a woman! But not to show off in public, but for their own self! And the same is stated for men.
Tattoos are such a taboo in ‘Islamic world’ because of their perception. As in the west having a tattoo is considered show off your rebellious nature, your uniqueness, and being seditious. On the other hand in Pakistan, woman having their nose or ear pierced is considered (or used to anyway)traditional. Symbolic of keeping the traditions & not being rebellious.
So you will see more ‘modern’ or rather ‘western’ Pakistani girls/women not piercing their noses or ears or other parts … until the 90s. And now it’s ‘in’ again to pierce nose/ears/eyebrows, just cos its ‘in’ in the west.
p.s: yes y’all are allowed to throw your tamatar & anday at me!

Use a little common sense in drawing the line what it means for a woman to draw attention to oneself. I agree with what ahmedjee writes above.

It was an editorial comment.
ok what you people have forgotten and what ahmedjee has forgotten is that which hadith states that people in the time of the prophet had tatoos and it was a good thing. Did Aisha(ra) have a tatoo did our prophet? so if the highest people of iman did not have tatoo then what makes you think you are better than them, surely if it were a good thing we would have been taught to do so. now tatoos is mainly a western thing and copying the acts of the kufar is another wrong thing. Tatoos also permenantly scar your skin, with a certain design. are you allowed to distort your skin to make it look good? i dont see any benefits of tattoos, and from an islamic point i have never heard any scholar approve it.
