Can rear-facing carseats be made forward-facing?

Like say your child is over a year and her/his feet are hitting the back of the seat, though the child still fits the weight and height limitations of the carseat. Can you just turn the carseat around and make it forward-facing?

Re: Can rear-facing carseats be made forward-facing?

I think if it says that it can be converted from a rear facing to a forward facing one then, yes.
Like we had a Graco snugride 35 for our infant seat but it was only rear facing and could not be converted to a forward facing one.Now we have a Britax Marathon and that can be used as bot a rear facing and forward facing one.
If we were to try using the Graco one as a forward facing one I am not sure if the base would have fixed with the car's seat and all those belts etc in a proper way to be converted into a forward facing seat. And that would have been unsafe I think.

Why do you ask..??..I thought you guys had already upgraded to a FF seat.

Re: Can rear-facing carseats be made forward-facing?

Yes we have our FF. But we're about to have lots of guests with babies descend upon us, some from overseas. Trying to figure out if they can use Bunny's old carseat (Chicco KeyFit30 -- doesn't say convertible). Hubby seemed to think it would be okay, but I'm uncertain. These folks aren't strict about carseats, but that makes me more concerned. Anyway, we'll try to keep it rear-facing for now.

I wouldn't risk it.

Re: Can rear-facing carseats be made forward-facing?

you could try renting car seats if the need is temporary.

Re: Can rear-facing carseats be made forward-facing?

most of the time NO

There are few car seats though which can be used both rare and forward facing but this is clearly spelled out on the manual. If you dont have manual, just go to any 'babies R Us' store. They normally have free car-seat support.

Thanks, guys!

Re: Can rear-facing carseats be made forward-facing?

Rear facing seats are rear facing for a reason. In case of accidents/shock baby's neck doesn't get pressure. In front facing position there is a danger of hurting/breaking baby's neck.

The recent recommendation that came out by pediatrics society or whatever the hell they call them has extended the recommended age for rear upto 2 years from 20 months.

If you have a minivan then you can tilt back the seat back so that baby's feet don't touch the back. If you don't have a minivan then, well, you don't have car seat issues, you have car issues :p
