Can India be a superpower?

I agree with Mr Guha that India can never be a superpower. Here are the reasons

10 reasons why India can’t be a superpower

The ten reasons he lists are:

  1. Nepotism determines opportunities and success
  2. Unchecked degradation of the environment
  3. Religious extremism
  4. Left wing extremism
  5. Right wing extremism
  6. The gap between rich and poor
  7. Lack of objective criticism in the media
  8. No long-term government policy
  9. Internal disharmony between regions
  10. Difficult border relations

The Indian state is not built on unified nationalism, but on the embrace of pluralism. And 60 years after the efforts of Gandhi, a revival of India’s internal threats seems a reality. There are too many fault-lines in the Indian society to be a superpower.

India should not even attempt to become a superpower. India should adhere to its constitutional ideals, fight national fires and try to heal and harmonize

Re: Can India be a superpower?

this topic has been discussed to death but whatever floats your boat.

Re: Can India be a superpower?

Barring a few on the lunatic fringe, Indians in general (me included) have no aspirations of being a superpower.

We'd be much happier if we can afford the poorest of our citizens a lifestyle similar to todays citizens of Malaysia & Thailand, in the next 10 - 15 years.

That would be the measure of our success.

Re: Can India be a superpower?

Re: Can India be a superpower?

Re: Can India be a superpower?

Re: Can India be a superpower?

Superpowers have always had more internal stability than India has.

Realistically I think that India will end up achieving superpower status, but not in the near future. Give it about 150 more years.

A Japanese point of view

Perception and Reality in India

http://mdn.mainichi.jp/features/news/20101008p2a00m0na019000c.html

Annual economic growth of 8.5 percent, a world-class IT industry, a population of 1.2 billion that could overtake China in coming years – these were my images of India before visiting the country. I thought of India as a country of rapid economic growth, approaching the superpower status of China and the U.S.

Reality sunk in as we spent five hours traveling along unkempt roads through heavy traffic jams from New Delhi to the Taj Mahal, 220 kilometers away. The scenery along the way was a reflection of a developing country. How could I bridge the gap between the image and the reality? That was the subject of my first trip to India

Re: Can India be a superpower?

If you want to be a superpower you have to spread your ideology to the world not remain insular in just your own country.

In last few decades only the US and USSR where superpowers they spread their ideology to other nations and controlled many of them.

India is no where near the stage of superpower because it does not have an ideology which it can spread to the world.

Re: Can India be a superpower?

how about practicing best religion of the world? India has only 40% Muslims. Why is Saudi a super power now? They have money, technology and power...

Re: Can India be a superpower?

The elite english speaking citizens of india living in major metros have this notion of making india a superpower. Even I had once upon a time. They should get over this non-sense and just figure out ways how to improve the lives of their own country men. Such notions are further spread by people like Abdul Kalam. He might be a nice guy, but he is just making many indians to dream too much by saying india can be a developed country by 2020. He should rather suggest many urban indians to keep their feet on the ground.

Thora kum please...

Re: Can India be a superpower?

Saudi arabia is superpower?? in what? they cannot even make their own soap or make simple light bulb!

They have oil money and that is it they have no brains and no idea what to do when oil money finish.

Re: Can India be a superpower?

Check your facts! Saudi is a very rich country because they have Hejaz. Allah (SWT) has blessed Saudi Arabia and no one commits crime there. Why? because it is the land Ibrahim(r.a.) envisioned will be the promised land in Al-Quran. This is where our own Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W.) was born and promised to make the world a better place. How come Saudis invented Tanks and Tube lights if they have no technology? Why is Wahhabi Islam considered best quality of life?

Re: Can India be a superpower?

Abdul Kalam is a kafir. No Indian muslims should fight against their own muslims brothers. i.e. Pakistanis. India can not be a developed country until it fixes its own problems like religion

Re: Can India be a superpower?

Sorry to burst your bubble brother. I'm a Muslim and I live in the Gulf so do understand, I know what I'm talking about.

Crime exists in Saudi Arabia. Yes, it might be a way way way less common than other places in the world. But the stories I know shakes head
Tanks and tubelights? They need to work a LOT on their industries and the R&D that goes on. Right now, they're just buying stuff from all over.
And don't even start about the rulers there...

Overall they do a lot for Islam and all but seriously, like look around brutha!
