a family that I know in Pakistan is in bad financial shape and I was sending them money. I know that the family is eligible for zakat, but the guy's name starts with sayed. Can I give them zakat?
My question is mainly to shia brothers, but all can answer.
u should ask this to some scholar...
In that case they are eligible for khums which is a far bigger portion of money than the mandatory zakat. For example, I pay close to a $1,000 zakat annually but my** khums is about 3 times** of that which is exclusive for the sadat.
Isnt it 8 times ?
Zakat is 2.5 % while Khums i 20% rite ?
ALSO
Syeds r not eligible for (BOTH) Zakat and Sadqa rite ?
Now abt Sadqa i have heared, SYED CAN take saqa from SYED but NOT from NON SYED ,.... does same apply to Zakat ?
Nabaigh, We Certainly pay Zakat to make ALLAH j.j and His Prophet s.a.w happy. Why would u pay Zakat against the teaching of Prophet s.a.w ? If you think, Prophet s.a.w DID ALLOW sadqa and Zakat on Syeds, can you please provide us a reference ?
TLK..... IF you give him money saying, it is zakat or Sadqa he will most likely return it saying, we rnt allowed to take Sadqa or Zakat.
Also, the title is wrong, Syed doesnt have to be a shia.... I think most of Syeds from my village r sunni, if not most than atleast 40% r sunni.

ur quite rite ..syed's r not allowed to take sadaqa...that a well known fact.
It is to my understanding that Zakaat can NOT be given to … or received by Syeds. Someone has just asked me why … can you give proof as to why and/or its validity to if this is true or not?
Al-Salam alaykum In Mukhtasar al-Quduri (with its Hashiya Al-Lubab by Shaykh Abd al-Ganiyy al-Maydani, the student of Allama ibn Abidin ) v1 p168 it is stated:
Zakah cannot be given to the (some of the) Banu Hasim* (because Allah Taala has forbidden for them the dirt of people's wealth and has given them in place of that a fifth of the Khums of the Booty.) *The Banu Hasim are the progeny of Ali, Abbas, Jafar, `Aqil and Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib and excludes the progeny of Abu Lahab.
This was an honour that Allah had given them for their giving support to Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam in Jahiliyya and Islam.
There are also ahadith that mention that Zakah is forbidden for the Banu Hashim.
In Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Nos.
1420 and 2907 and in Sahih Muslim Hadith No. 1069 it is reported that Hadrat Hasan r.a once took a date from the dates of sadaqa and placed it in his mouth. At this Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said: “Kakh!Kakh! Throw it out! Dont you know that we do not eat charity?”
This hadith as well as others indicate that Zakah is not allowed for the family of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam.
Allah Ta`ala Knows Best.
As is said earlier I never heard/read that 'pay zakat only to a certain group of peoples' or 'don't pay to this or that group of peoples'. If there is any verse from Qur'an you would like to me to search it, than plz quote here of pm me. In the meanwhile I'll see what I can find in Hadiths.
Ok, I will them present u a couple from saha sitta.... let me know if you need more hadiths from your own Sunni books.....
Sahi Bukhari, chapter 24, tradition 562
Narrated Abu Huraira : Dates used to be brought to Allah's Apostle immediately after being plucked. Different persons would bring their dates till a big heap collected (in front of the Prophet). Once Al-Hasan and Al-Husain were playing with these dates. One of them took a date and put it in his mouth. Allah's Apostle looked at him and took it out from his mouth and said, "Don't you know that Muhammad's offspring do not eat what is given in charity?"
Sunan Abu Dawud, chapter 9, tradition 1570,
Narrated Mu'awiyah ibn Haydah: The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: For forty pasturing camels, one she-camel in her third year is to be given. The camels are not to be separated from reckoning. He who pays zakat with the intention of getting reward will be rewarded. If anyone evades zakat, we shall take half the property from him as a due from the dues of our Lord, the Exalted. There is no share in it (zakat) of the descendants of Muhammad (peace_be_upon_him).
TLK: they calim themselves Ahl-e-Bait, therefore it is bad to send zakat money to them. my two cents. but if they are in real need then who cares, send money to them.

Zakat is fixed whereas khums is subjective to the savings. I think Nussairee based the khums calculations in the example on whatever the net saving on the income might be.
By the way the subject of the thread is misleading. The word 'Shia' need to be replaced by 'Syed'.
**Bukhari Volume 2, Book 24, Number 562 ** is rite on topic
Here is a similiar one
**Bukhari Volume 2, Book 24, Number 568 :
**Al-Hasan bin 'Ali took a date from the dates given in charity and put it in his mouth. The Prophet said, “Expel it from your mouth. Don’t you know that we do not eat a thing which is given in charity?”
exactly, some shias are syed while some aren't. non-syed shias are eligible.
in general, if a Muslim belongs to the family of prophet Muhammad(saw) then giving zakat money is not good idea. It is kind of disrespect.
STA, if you go back and read your post, you'll see you used the wrong terms interchangeably (Shia and Syed). You need to take care that you write what you mean and mean what you write, otherwise you just confuse the reader.

I agree that title is little misleading, and I should’ve said Sayed, but I said Shia because at least in Pakistan, most of the Sayeds are Shias, so I was confident that when I ask for Shia brothers’ opinion on this topic, I would get a more credible response.
I already know that you cannot give Zakat to Sayeds (descendants of Prophet ), hence this thread.
Without beating around the bushes, let me rephrase myself clearly. What are the chances that present Sayeds (be them shia or sunni) are real descendants of Prophet PBUH? I personally think the we can say for sure that we have no real descendant living in this day and age (I apologize, I dont want to offend anyone). Or at least we can say that we have as many descendant with non-Sayed names that we have with Sayed names, so there is no real way of knowing. Which means that the restriction of not giving Zakat to Sayeds should no longer be there.
