Can women in Islam divorce their husband or is it something the husband can only do?
Re: Can a woman divorce her husband in Islam?
yes it's called khula, for a woman it's khula for a man it's called talaq. if the husband refuses, she has to seek a qadi who has the ultimate say in granting her the divorce as long as she fullfills the requirements of it like returning the mahr and reimbursing the husband for what he provided during the marriage.......that's as far as i know about khula, i might be wrong
some of the other members that are muslim will be able to give you more accurate info.
Re: Can a woman divorce her husband in Islam?
Yes, of course she can.. Check out Sunnipath for detailed info on it..
Re: Can a woman divorce her husband in Islam?
Yes, but there are reasons for it, which if met, a woman is entitled to divorce. The reasons include:
1. inability of husband to provide for his wife and children,
2. Inability of husband to perform his marital and conjugal obligation,
and prolonged absence etc.

That's not correct.
Just as under western law, a marriage can be ended in either a divorce, or an annulment (khula).
Islamically, in a divorce, the dowry given to the woman is kept by the woman. In an annulment, the dowry is returned to the husband.
A man can unilaterally initiate a divorce, in which case the wife keeps the dowry. If we wants to retrieve the dowry, he has to petition a judge to grant an annulment instead.
A women can unilaterally initiate an annulment (khula), in which case she forfeits her right on the dowry. If she wants to keep the dowry but still end the marriage, she would have to petition a judge for a divorce.
Re: Can a woman divorce her husband in Islam?
According to the book heela e najza, a woman also has a right to give divorce besides khula only if this was decided at the time of Nikah.
Funny and sad simultanously that this has never been told to muslim women but Islam does give this right to them.

Does this book quote any hadees or verse from Quran for this assertion ?

I have not read the book myself so do not really know what references are given in there. However, I have met few scholars who used this book as a source mentioning that book references to the teachings of prophet (saw). In fact, it is not even called 'talaq' when a woman gives it based on marital contract, the term used is 'Isma' or some even call it 'talaq e taufid'.

I never heard or read about what you are saying . Without any authentic references to this this opinion is as good as anybody's guess.
I would try to get my hands on this book.

Just so you know, based on the ruling in this book, the marital contract (nikah nama) in Pakistan has been modified to have this provision spelled out in case this is the wish of the girl or her parents. Again, I am not emphasizing on the authenticity or anything but it only goes to show the consensus of scholars in this matter at least in Pakistan.
Re: Can a woman divorce her husband in Islam?
^ I’ve heard one of Zakir Naik’s lecture confirming that she can keep the right to divorce at the time of Nikah. She can also state that her husband will not take another wife without her permission in the conditions section of the nikah papers.
