Serously though...muslims and even panamanians are getting jobs everyday in the US. Drop the attitude and become part of the system, everything else falls in line pretty nicely.
angelo, yes.
I am sure there may be cases where people were not hired due to their names, some study recently argued that african american sounding names get fewer calls even with identical skillset, i guess they had sent fake resumes to companies, dunno how valid it was. Kher..common sense dictates that there must be cases where people were not hired and/or people were let go due to their faith but that is not the norm.
2 weeks ago I met a gentleman with a a name abdulrehman or abdullah who has a long beard and all and actually works for a govt security agency.
I will tell you this much, At my workplace the level of support from my colleagues and seniors was amazing, and they personally tried to ensure I was doing okay.
I will give you 2 examples..
once i was stopped at a security checkpoint at some airport because teh clowns could not figure out that my drivers license had my last name first (as the state drivers license had) vs my greencard which had the first name first. as i was pulled out of the line..my entire team got out of the line to wait for me.
another time, i was in a small plane where if the flight is not full they move ppl around to have equal number of ppl towards the front, middle and back. the stewardess asked me to move..I did not know why and had asked her why i needed to move as I picked my stufff up..but the seniors I was travelling with got upset and told the stewardess that if they moved me back our team which flew on that flight every week will switch to a diff carrier and how lame it was, until she told them it was to have the equal number of ppl in front and back..one of the partners said..well if that is the case, move me back and not him. I dont want him to feel that its due to his ethnicity.
There are good and bad ppl everywhere..link up with the good ones at work

There's good, there's bad and the ugly no matter where you go. If some one want's to hate you they will find some reason ... color, race, height, clothing, you name it. Do u know how paki's are treated in gulf countries ... and we are all muslims .. just imagine
Anyhow, for all the ignorants out there ... there is far more good ... just gotta stay positive and focused. And when u do meet an ignorant fool ... educate them ... do not go down to their level ...
I agree there is lot of bias against muslims, specially in blue color and low wage white color group, specially sicne september 11 and current administration is not doing enough to combat that. America is the mecca of diversity and Insha-Allah this phase will be over soon, just like it did for Japanese and German immigrants after world war II.
I didnt make a statement, I asked a question based on info given to me by a US citizen of Pakistani origin, based in Texas. I have never been to America (hope to visit pretty soon), and just wanted to see if it was that bad for Muslims now.

Brothers,

Glad you have all been treated well. :)

Angelo: Take everyones opinions with a grain of salt. Everyones experiences differ, so the best advice I can give you is to come and see for yourself.
I'll tell you my experiences immediately after 9-11 were nothing but positive. Like fraudia, I had many coworkers come up to me and talk about it, offer to help if needed etc. I mean on 9-11 itself we were all there together in NYC, stuck for a while not knowing what was going to happen, so it became a shared experience. On the other side, I am a very friendly person, always have been...people are at ease around me so perhaps that accounts for something.
I live in a town with a very small muslim or even a minority population, but none of the harrassments/problems took place. My parents still throw that wicked eid party for our family and friends from the town, they haven't scaled back there social calender at all, and I still get that smile from the librarian as I take out my predictable set of economics textbooks. So much may have changed for America, but the people have been the same for me. Hope it helps!
Angelo, just wanted to give you one more example of the good in people here, despite the economic situation right now. I have mentioned on other posts, mum is American while my father's family is from Pakistan. Recently, they both were looking to change jobs. Father found a teaching position after just two interviews - mum is still looking!hehehe Guess you just never know;) good luck in your search
A muslim brother was layed off from our division few months ago. I saw him sitting in a cubicle other day working and he told me he is happy...after he was layed off, he found an equally paying job with another company but now after 3 months our company wanted him back to do some work so he said he will work only few hours in the evening with a higher pay..they agreed. Now guy has 1.5 jobs and making 2.5x the money than before. and yes he almost looks like a maulana with his beard and shorter mustaches.
Allah knows for a guy like me, far from a Mullah, very moderate and quite pro US, seeing that they treat you ppl well is great. Fear is the only thing stopping me pursuing a future over the Atlantic.
