I can’t believe I’m actually encouraging Monk by answering this thread but I have a story to share, LOL! I figure I’ll post before the thread gets locked 
So through that whole friend of a friend of a friend, I came to know about a Sikh couple where the newlyweds had one of each of their parents living with them, his dad and her mom. The details are sketchy, but I think one of the grandparents was divorced and the other was widowed. Anyhow, long story short, through proximity grew feelings and next thing you know the grandparents were young enough to become parents again. They anticipated their shaadi vows and ended up expecting a visit from the stork. They got married, but the newlywed couple was livid and initially had nothing to do with their parents.
So to answer Monk, in this case no, the grandpa and grandma were not capable of just being friends
