Haha that takes the cake. Sorry mamaof3 but again I think you’re generalizing way way too much.
It has nothing to do with looking down. You should see how some people travel / live in Pakistan!
Personally I will only go camping if theres a cabin and a clean bathroom and a place for me to sleep. Not on the floor. I am not a fan of the creepy crawly creatures that rule the wild lands. And without clean bathrooms. No way.
Mamaof3, you are right, camping for girls is looked down upon in desi circles. All these guppies here aren't 'aunties' yet. Ask the same question a few years from now and you will get a totally different answer. Haven't you noticed that almost all of them haven't gone camping but wouldn't mind going. hehe
I went camping with some hunters from south .. these dudes are a breed unlike any other.
Having read all your answers I think that firstly the majority of you are all from the US and there appears to be more of a culture of going off into the woods or whereever to camp, some of you mention wood cabins and that sounds like fun but here in the UK the only kind of camping I can think of is the type Ive described.
Quite a few people go caravaning ie attach a caravan to car and drive to caravan park with facilities like showers/play area and sports facilities and stay there or rent out a large non movable caravan (looks like temp housing) and they have the the same facilities as the above.....
the kind of people that go on this type of holiday are generally the type of people that most "desis" wouldnt feel comfortable with...
I dont think Camping is looked down upon but its just that it hasnt been done before, and just as Pak origin people have started to holiday in places other than Pakistan Im sure that they'll consider camping as a an option (but not in the rain in the uk)
hmm actually, everytime we've gone somewhere, we end up staying in a small cottage though. My family is pretty big on nature.. like trekking and bush walking.. and all that jazz.
Ok m3 (u know i just realized i couldn't shorten your nick because I would be calling you mama!)
My family used to camp when i was little..it constituted going out to a huge park, getting a cabin and sleeping in nice beds, having our radio going, the car near by and a frige for our food....it wasn't until I grew up that I had the opportunity to really go camping.
When I met my husband that I actually went backpacking camping as well as car camping... My first trip involved backpacking 5 miles into the woods, setting up a tent next to a beautiful stream where we were 1 of 3 groups in a huge camp site so no one could see each other...We had a fire ring, I started a fire..we slept on the ground (on comfortable thermarests and warm sleeping bags), had to use the outdoor bathrooms (ahem...)...cooked on little stoves.....it was just truly peacful, and nice
I don't think desis/abcds look down upon it...I think they just don't know how to do it and their camping tends to be staying at a hotel and maybe going for an easy walk...I also think perhaps girls are raised to more fragile and enclosed thus being one with nature seems too hardy?
Either way, We have so much fun camping and miss it since we've moved to NY!!! We both really want to take our kids (when we have them) because it is an amazing experience.
