Camping - Car Camping and Semi Primitive Camping

Who has been camping overnight in the woods (state park or what not)? Please share your experiences.
I really want to try camping overnight at a drive up campsite later this year or hopefully by Spring next year. In the meantime I am planning to slowly get equipment together.

We are 2 adults and 3 kids and since we won’t be camping on any backpacking trips, I believe the big family cabin tent will work well for us. Please share pointers on what to bring, the necessities.
I will have a car to bring stuff in, but dont want to bring my whole house.

What did you use for sleeping on? Sleeping bags with a mattress underneath? Did it feel safe at night with so many other campers etc

I see many campsites have grills and tables, even hot showers nearby. How has the experience been for you? Especially how did kids like it if you took your kids.

Weekend after eid we are planning to rent a cabin at one of these sites in either Lake George area or PA to at least get an introduction to some of the outdoorsy stuff for the kids.

I'm not sure people around here are into camping. But its a cool idea though, in France my landlady would do it with her family in summer in the border region of Spain and France.

As for camping in open we also did it couple of times but it was not comfortable first time as we did not took mats and the ground was bit uncomfy. Next time we took mats and still could feel un-even ground.

The problem with camping car is parking in cities, unless you only want to go for camping the camper vans are pain to drive arround. We just booked mobile home at the camping sites and it was much easy to go arround in our car, also it frees up the speace for sleeping bags, pots / pans and other stuff.
