Calling all PC DIY Gurus..

what’s the best you can put together for under $100 (excluding prices for accessories like CD-ROM, diskette drive, keyboard, mouse).

i’m specifically looking for suggestions towards motherboard combos or mobo, processor memory and adding a drive separately.

don’t mind Intel or AMD
don’t mind brand of mobo as long as it’s reliable
don’t need huge hard drive.. 20-40 GB ok
512MB is ok doesn’t need to be the fastest..
USB2.0 is required
don’t mind if sound isn’t 5.1 or top notch
video memory of 64MB is fine .. any brand card will do.

sirf 100 doller pa jee??!

hmm...

depends on what do you want it for. Just for internet surfing or for the kids to play and to learn.

Re: Calling all PC DIY Gurus..

well just surfing 'n stuff.. and internet gaming.. nothing too fancy.. the fun part is trying to get the "best" in that amount..

Re: Calling all PC DIY Gurus..

I dont know where you live but here in Germany I can get an assembled PC with PIII, 512 MB SDRAM, 64 MB VGA, Sound On Board including Flopy and CD-ROM Drives with in that price. Just check your local Second Hand PC Stores or try ebay. I am sure you can also get a second hand modem or network card for internet surfing with in the range of 8 - 10 Dollars.

I have this old PC which does'nt support USB 2.0. It gives me error while connecting USB stick but I can write n read data from my USB 2.0 stick.

Another thing, I usually dont buy such things over ebay, but when I must then I only buy them with 50 KM of my location. So I can check and test before picking 'em up.

Re: Calling all PC DIY Gurus..

yeah ebay is an option.. but there are tons and tons of PC's and each slightly different so it's a headache.. plus almost all charge like $50 for shipping straight away.. doesn't leave much room for final price to be under $100 and still give a decent PC.. i won't mind a PIII 1G or even a little less with those specs.. but here in the US.. ain't gonna happen.. at leat not on e-bay for under $150

Re: Calling all PC DIY Gurus..

This board by ASrock comes with everything integrated: VGA, Sound, LAN
ASRock K7S41GX

Costs around € 35,- here (thats US$ 45,-)

Add a CPU (AMD Sampron) + memory lets say 256mb, thats an additional: € 70,- + 23,-

(US$ 90,- + 30) => 45 + 120 = US$ 165,-

guess you’ll go outside the budget.

Re: Calling all PC DIY Gurus..

thanks for the suggestions Gizzy.. the ASRock boards are good value.

btw this 'budget' PC i'm making will be ATX form factor.. (picked up an old Pentium MMX computer for a whopping $2 in a garage sale :D i like the HUGE case it comes in.. plenty of air inside and no worries about wire mess.

I'm gravitating towards a nforce2 ultra chipset at least.. since i plan to keep this one a while, just like the earlier PC i built, a pIII 1GHz on the ASUS CUSL2C which is still serving me.. Chinatech any good for mobo? any problems? what about MSI and Biostar?

i hadn't considered Sempron but based on your suggestions i'll look them up too.
