Calling all NY Ahamadi Lahoria

I was just reading through a list(which to me seemed very comprehensive) of all the restaurants/dhabas in Lahore and much to my disappointment, I didn’t see ‘Phujay dey Paaye’ mentioned anywhere. Could this just have been an oversight?? I expected to see it mentioned right up front..in the same league as your Pearl Continentals and the rest. I think you need to file a protest with the creators of the list against this gross negligence - I can give you details(I don’t think this ‘ghustakhi’ should go unchallenged).

And while on the subject of Lahori food.. I happened to have ‘saag and muki ki roti’ while I was in California recently. The saag tasted like mashed broccolli and the maki ki roti like ‘gatta’(cardboard). I had it at a Punjabi Maasi’s house. Having heard so many good things about ‘saag and maki ki roti’ I was disappointed with what I saw and tasted. Our Californian Maasi needs to take some punjabi gourmet cooking classes. Since I have read rave reviews about saag and maki ki roti, I’d like to know where I can get the real authentic saag and roti on the east coast..(between NY, NJ and Washintong DC). Right now for me the saag/roti duo rate 1 on a scale of 1-10.

I am making a list of all the places/foods/shopping malls to check out in Lahore because I amy be visiting Pakistan in Oct/Nov this year inshallah. Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Antidote Yaar. I have mixed feelings about it. I personally think that some things should be left unannounced for the fear of them becoming too commercially known which means a higher demand and a substantial decrease in quality. The deal with “Phajay dey Payee” is that the parts that are used come from non-commercial animals raised on farms outskirts of Lahore. Should the demand for his product exceeds the limited supply the quality will sure to suffer. To which I strongly oppose.

You should learn to keep your mouth shut and enjoy Payee in seclusion. Don’t advertise it too much or else all the Bhukay people (like Asif and Xtreme) will leave nothing for the two of us.

There are a couple of other neat joints in Lahore which are not known to the public. If you want to learn about them, drop me a note.

I get it now...the secret behind 'Phujay dey payes' success. thanks for bringing it to light.

I don't think I can open my mouth after eating any kind of payyas let alone Phujay's.
The 'shorba' is so sticky that the lips get sealed automatically. In case of Phujay's Payee..I guess the mouth would have to be pried open with pliers or something. Say no more about Phuja..my lips will be sealed from now on. As for Asif and Xtreme..I hope they get 'budhazmi' before they get to the aforementioned payaas. (sorry guys, I get selfish when it comes to good food).

My anticipated visit to Pakistan will be my second one..(the first time I was there was in 1985 but I sepent most of my time in Karachi). Because of time limitations, I want to plan my visit so I get to see all the interesting spots in Lahore, avoiding the 'touristy' kind of places.

Hayaa Bibi..thanks for the kind offer..I am really touched. Would it be possible to get me your Mom's recipe for saag and roti?? I cook pretty good myself, so I could give it a try.

Anarkali Begum..I've added your suggestions to my list..thanks much.

Forget everything...just go to gowalmandi. You'll get a taste of everything down there.
