calgary gupees

Which part of calgary is the best to live in, i.e. better housing, better schools, health care etc?

I dont think we have any calgarians, we might have one or two actually so any help appreciated.

Thanks

Re: calgary gupees

well calgary is ok....but i think edmonton is better.

Re: calgary gupees

Why do you think Edmonton is better?

Re: calgary gupees

well coz its the capital city of alberta n itz bigger nd there r more opportunities there...

Re: calgary gupees

Really depends on your needs. Most of the desis live in north east close to the air port. This is where the desi shops are. You can get to downtown in 15-20 minutes from this ares in normal traffic. There are elementary and junier high schools and one highschool close to this area. In calgary the city has designated school for defferent areas. For example, if you live in falconridge, Lester B. Pearson HS is way closer but students are bused out to another school quiet a distance away. City provides special buses that pick up and drop off students at certain stops. Most of the highend areas are in Northwest and southwest with some in the extreme southeast.

As far as housing is concerned, it is very very expensive in calgary. Construction of new houses can't keep pace with the demand. New neighbourhoods are springing up all over the city. Health care would be the same all over i guess caz its all provided by the government.

I disagree with the guy who said Edmonton is better. Edmonton is our capital but calgary is the new ecnomic capital of canada. we have way more jobs than ppl to fill them. all over the city ppl have Now Hiring signs. Alot of big companies have their head offices here and more are shifting, especially the oil companies. The ecnomic growth rate of calgary has been the highest in the country for the past 2 years.

Re: calgary gupees

Calgary is way way better from Edmonton. I don’t know a single person from Edmonton who’s visted Calgary and would say Edmonton is better, and vice versa. I’ve been to Edmonton a few times, and personally, except for the West Ed Mall, there’s nothing great about the city.

Now about which part to live in, it totally depends on what kind of place u like. If you wanna be around tons and tons of brown people, then NE is the place for you. If you want a mix of white, brown, asian…then NW is the place. Thats where I live, and I love it. Very beautiful houses, and not too far away from Downtown. And if you like to be in an area with the least number of brown people compared to the other places, then SW is the place.

And its true, housing is very expensive in Calgary right now..too much demand and not enough houses. But the prices have stayed where they are for a while now…they’re not going up like crazy like they were a few months ago.

All in all, its a great place to live in…highly recommended…and of course…a lot of job opportunities are here as well :k:

Re: calgary gupees

Thanks my fellow Guppees.

Well I'm a process Engineer here in the UK, I've had enough of it in this country so i've sent my registration off for APEGGA, one of the many things i have to do if i am to practise engineering in Canada, Alberta.

I'm applying for the resident status thing in 4 months time...i know it's a long processs, something like 3-4 years to get the perm resident but it'll give me more time to save money to get a house when i finally move there......

Thanks for the replies, if i need any more information i'll post a topic nearer the time..

Thanks

Re: calgary gupees

i am also a process engineer in calgary, housing is very expensive expect to be around 400k for a normal sized house...process engineering jobs are in abundance over here, basically with 3-4 yrs experience you can walk into an office and expect to be hired...i think you could get a job and come here more quickly than to wait for the immigration process...plus who knows how long this "boom" will last so might as well take advantage while you have the chance...p.s. i'm from edmonton and i think its a better city to live in, calgary is more esthetically pleasing but i feel edmonton is better imo
