Calcutta 1880-1960

i’m trying to find a good history book on the history of Calcutta from about late 1800s to 1960 (not later than that). Something that would discuss the society, the demographics, the politics, literature, social organizations, - basically everything - in Calcutta around that time period. Everything i look into either focuses too much on the British political influence which is important, but i want something that’s more balanced, gives an overview of everything not just politics but the demographics of what Calcutta was like at that time… everything including population, migration numbers, social demographics, numbers of Muslims/Sikhs etc, which areas they lived in blah blah blah.

:frowning: Can someone help please.

Calcutta was small south eastern village of Bengal. British revivied it by entering through one of its village to Name Sutanati and by establishing EastIndia company. Thats why ther are no traces of calcutta before british arrival. During mughal time its was only an entry port like other, what british took advantage of and brought a village to lime light. Though Gaur, Murshidabad,Sonar GaoN were Mughal capital of bengal British’s made calcutta their capital of bengal. Ones British established EastIndia company people from all over started coming there for jobs thus created a huge population influx. It was established as an east bengal status by combining the eastern part of greater bengal with southeast calcutta thus undermining the value of greater bengal.
