Calcium Supplement

Hi Every body,

Instead of milk and Tums, what are the other supplements for calcium intake to fulfil the requirements of the body ? Some of my friends take Tums as a calcium supplement. For me it is difficult to take milk daily :frowning: but I want to take calcium supplement, so anybody know plz share the ideas.

Re: Calcium Supplement

They have those chocolate calcium supplements (Viactin?) that are pretty good.

Re: Calcium Supplement

There are plenty of dietary sources. Most unrefined food has some calcium - not much but it adds up. Whole flour instead of white, whole grains in general. Many greens have a lot of calcium. And then there is tofu if it had been coagulated using a calcium compound and some types of corn meal which have been processed with lime (calcium carbonate). Sesame has a lot of calcium. Simply adding it - preferably ground - to your diet will add the calcium. Try and use tahina (sesame paste) o gomasio (sesame and salt, o good salt substitute) - also there are several desi sweets like chikki that have sesame. Baghare baigan uses til, and there are several other dishes that use it in cooking too.

Some types of canned fish containing bones (eg. mackrel and salmon) have a high calcium content. Well cooked chicken soup (til the bones are soft) has a high calcium content. Some people make a calcium drink dropping clean eggshells in an acidic medium like vinegar or apple juice for several days.

In general however all you need to do is eat a varied, balanced diet and you can get enough calcium for your needs.

Thank you so much for sharing...

Re: Calcium Supplement

If you do take calcium in a supplement form then you should take it last thing at night as calcium absorption is dependent on how much urine you pass.......at night you go to the loo less, if at all and so your body is able to absorb more of the mineral.

Nice info there...Thanks!

Re: Calcium Supplement

If milk is not something you like, try to include the following in your diet:
1. Flavoured milk shake
2. Yogurt both plain and fruity
3. Smoothies or lassi
4. Custard made with milk
5. Pancakes made with milk
6. Ice-cream in moderation

South Asian girls have a high risk of osteopororis due to heridity and we all must take calcium supplements especially if we are thinking of getting married and having children in the next 4-6 years. Those who are thinking of a family within a year or two must take pre-natal vitamins along with a calcium supplement to ensure that inshallah when the child is conceived it does not drain nutrients from the bones which happens when the body reserve as well as dietary intake is insufficient. This leads to de-calcification of bones and teeth.
