does anybody happen to know anything bout California State univ, at Pomona… ? the campus, community, housing, anything… in general ?
Excellent school for Engineering majors. What is your major?
I had applied there once and got accepted and interviewed and all set to go and then I heard from another more prestigious school and chose to go there instead. I have a few Paki friends who graduated from there in EE. Dunno much about campus housing. I would advise housing in nearby apartments or condos, preferrably sharing the place with another student.
It is a commuter school, minutes from LA in Pomona. The university has built a new engineering building and library. It is a good school for undergraduate studies. The school is famous for engineering and business majors. Housing condition in the area is not bad. You can check with campus for on-campus housing or MSA for off-campus housing. MSA at this school is very active. I have a couple of friends who graduated from this school. One complain that I get is campus don't have many good places to eat.
Some other good CSU schools in the area are:
CSU Long Beach (Parking and Housing is a problem)
CSU Fullerton
thanx for the info.
i have applied to their Biotechnology program, heard its good and since not a lot of schools in southern california offer a degree in Biotech, so i dont have very many options, although ive also applied to UC Irvine as a General Biology major and most probably will go there if accepted.
but i havent heard good things bout UCI in the sense that ppl rnt very friendly ova there and most life science majors are pre-meds so the competition is very tough and they will go “out of their” way to get you out of the race to get into their med school blah…blah…
o well, we will see what happens…! ![]()
thanx again !

thanx SK, i have applied to both long beach and fullerton in addition to pomona , but i have no idea which one is best out of the three....,
ive also applied to UCI and will definitely go there if accepted !
For Biotechnology programs ... UCI is definitely a good option in the area, CSU LB is also a good choice in CSU system. Are you considering UCSD? Their program in Biotechnology/ Biomedical Engineering is very good. UCD is also a good school if you are considering NORCAL area. My sister is a Bioengineering major.
meea, if possible why dont u go and visit the school..u could email the psa/msa and ask someone to have u over for two three days, u could stay on campus and check the school out...this is quite common....also have u surfed into the uni's website and gotten a feel for the community...? maybe u can also see what their msa and psa is like....
i dont know anyone going there unfortunately...
UCI ppl r not unfriendly...i have heard good stuff abt UCI and know some ppl who went there...its a good school...i agree with Saqib Khan, you should also consider UCSD and UCD...UCI, UCSD, and UCD are all good schools for bio related stuff...
you can surf into their websites and check the course offerrings in that area and the research areas of the profs etc...also UCD and UCSD have good desi communities...

thanx irem, i am applying to Davis although im not sure if i wanna go there or not, i dont know anyone in northern california and my parents and most of my family ppl and friends live in southern cali, so i dont know if i could live so far away from them! esp my parents, cuz i do still depend on them a lot! i dunno...ill see....im confused....! :(
aww ![]()
r u a girl? or a guy?
its tough being away from family…i know…my parents were in pakistan and i was in the usa for college…
alhamdulilah i managed but ya it was really tough
if u go to a school in southern cal r u going to be living at home or moving out? what do ur parents say?
i was in north cal for 5 yrs…just finished my bs in cs and moving back to pakistan next week inshallah…
there is a very big and nice pakistani community in north cal…i know davis has a very nice pakistani community…but if u dont feel emotionally ready to come so far away from home i can totally understand that, and its perfectly ok, dont force urself, just go to a school in southern cal, live at home, you could always transfer to another school later on if u feel like it coz transferring from one UC to another is not so dfficult i think…
i dont think it really matters all that much which school u go to among these…they r all good schools…just do what u feel happy abt… :k:
good luck ![]()
thanx irem! those really were comforting words
People have different opinions based on their experience... based on mine, me being a "veteran" of the CSU and Calif. Comm. college system, I would say definitely, definitely Cal Poly Pomona is your best choice. Going to UC means going to a non-hospitable, rather tough environment. Cal Poly Pomona is easily the best out of CSU system, and I can say from experience that their graduates get hired really fast. Housing around Pomona is really cheap as well, and I dont think if u will even need to share a room. Any other specific questions, please feel free to let me know. Also Irem, congratulations, all the best, lucky you for getting the chance to go back.
