Cake Decorating

Re: Cake Decorating

Yes I am taking the class at Michaels. Its quite affordable, $30.00 per course and they have 4 courses. They had a 50% off promo for the month of december so this first course only cost me $15.00 plus the cost of supplies.

Yesterday she taught us how to make buttercream icing which doesn't even contain any butter and is wayyy too sweet, its like the super sweet cakes you get at places like safeway, giant etc., the cheap ones :D The instructor is an almost old, African lady who seems to have arthritis and was also limping, due to which she took more time than she should have. The cake she brought in was a banana nut cake but a little overcooked at the top. So she sat there trying to scrape off the burnt parts and eventually had to pick them off. I was completely grossed out looking at that and thought to myself, God I hope she doesn't offer us any of this crap. Anyhow she went on to prepare the icing which was a bit of a mess too, the biggest mess probably being one of the ingredients, Crisco. That thing is so greasy, it could put crude oil to shame. One cup of Crisco some flavour and sugar! how many cups of sugar? FOUR cups of sugar. Eventually she finished icing her lopsided cake and then decorated it. She did a good job with the decoration, quite a pro and very quick at it. Finally she dropped the bombshell, we would get to eat the cake. Oh God I almost threw up. Any how I asked her for a very small piece and managed to just eat the insides of the cake and covered the rest with a napkin and off went my plate into the dustbin :D

Next class we have to take an iced cake to class and she will teach us how to decorate it, We'll be learning how to make leaves and flowers. Gia she said she would have us make that clown cake which looks really lousy, is that the first cake you decorated too? I was wondering if I should call her and ask if we can make some other cake. All that icing that goes on the clown cake will be such a waste honestly. I just wanna skip to making flowers and fondant :( Also she said we can use whatever we wish between the cake layers, what did you use? I was thinking of using fruits since the icing will be so damn sweet. What do you say?

Also anyone who is interested in taking the classes, buy your supplies using coupons. They have a 40% off coupon valid through dec 15th so buy ur decorating kit using that. Plus the instructor told us that Jo-ann fabrics store coupons as well as AC Moore coupons also work at Michaels, so use whatever you have.
