Has anyone taken cake decorating classes ever? Anyone good at it without having taken classes? I will be having my first class today. Its a 4 course series and each course has 2-3 classes in it. I’m pretty sure todays class will be a very basic one but I cannot wait till the last course where they teach you to make fondant I sooooo wanna make a pretty cake i will keep u guys posted on my progress. i think they teach how to make roses in the first course too.
Good luck Femme! I can sorta decorate cakes but not like the professional way...it still turns out OK (ish). But please post pictures of yoour creations.
fun! are you going to the michael's ones? im joining up in jan IA... its too busy these days. a few colleagues took those and they do teach you quite a bit.
yep I took Wilton cake decorating classes at Michaels.. it was fun and interesting but very time consuming.. we had to bake a cake every week and had to prepare extra frosting (which itself requires a lot of time).. I had a very limited time in the US so I just took Course 1 but I am sure it keeps getting better and you keep becoming pro at it. Yes, they will teach you how to make a rose in course 1 but lots of other flowers are in course II. :-)
Yes I am taking the class at Michaels. Its quite affordable, $30.00 per course and they have 4 courses. They had a 50% off promo for the month of december so this first course only cost me $15.00 plus the cost of supplies.
Yesterday she taught us how to make buttercream icing which doesn't even contain any butter and is wayyy too sweet, its like the super sweet cakes you get at places like safeway, giant etc., the cheap ones :D The instructor is an almost old, African lady who seems to have arthritis and was also limping, due to which she took more time than she should have. The cake she brought in was a banana nut cake but a little overcooked at the top. So she sat there trying to scrape off the burnt parts and eventually had to pick them off. I was completely grossed out looking at that and thought to myself, God I hope she doesn't offer us any of this crap. Anyhow she went on to prepare the icing which was a bit of a mess too, the biggest mess probably being one of the ingredients, Crisco. That thing is so greasy, it could put crude oil to shame. One cup of Crisco some flavour and sugar! how many cups of sugar? FOUR cups of sugar. Eventually she finished icing her lopsided cake and then decorated it. She did a good job with the decoration, quite a pro and very quick at it. Finally she dropped the bombshell, we would get to eat the cake. Oh God I almost threw up. Any how I asked her for a very small piece and managed to just eat the insides of the cake and covered the rest with a napkin and off went my plate into the dustbin :D
Next class we have to take an iced cake to class and she will teach us how to decorate it, We'll be learning how to make leaves and flowers. Gia she said she would have us make that clown cake which looks really lousy, is that the first cake you decorated too? I was wondering if I should call her and ask if we can make some other cake. All that icing that goes on the clown cake will be such a waste honestly. I just wanna skip to making flowers and fondant :( Also she said we can use whatever we wish between the cake layers, what did you use? I was thinking of using fruits since the icing will be so damn sweet. What do you say?
Also anyone who is interested in taking the classes, buy your supplies using coupons. They have a 40% off coupon valid through dec 15th so buy ur decorating kit using that. Plus the instructor told us that Jo-ann fabrics store coupons as well as AC Moore coupons also work at Michaels, so use whatever you have.
hinzie abhi tau kuch banaya hee nahi tau pic kahan ki? Insha Allah next week when I prepare my own stupid clown cake then I'll remember to take pics :)
Femme.. you are soooo right.. crisco is messy and the icing is way too sweet.. told ya it's time consuming but forgot to mention that icing is always tooo sweet and too much than actually required (usually you have to double the recipe meaning 8 cups of sugar, such a waste :D).. I never tasted my own cakes though, I used to give it to ppl living in shelter and/or my neighbors just because of the icing.
Honestly, I wanted to learn the techniques only and our inctructor was a pro so it was worth the effort.. now in Pakistan I usually make my own icing using heavy cream and canned fruits for filling. It's much better than the icing I learned there.
I always used that icing for filling but I guess fruit is a better substitue, go for it.
Clown cake was our second cake.. the first one was rainbow cake with writing on top.
ps: you can also make 6 cupcakes instead for clown cake lesson...that would contain less frosting. :-)
This is a coincidence. I just joined Michael’s cake decorating course I last week. Here is my first project on the second day of my class. Its a Rainbow Cake with butter cream icing and peach and cream filling.
A closer view showing detailing using medium consistency.
smooth guy, nice!! you did the spatula dipped in hot water to smooth out the icing trick?
femme, i never use the entire sugar for the Wilton buttercream icing recipe. but it definitely is one of the easier ones out there. you can use butter if you dont like crisco but the icing won’t be pure white then. and i prefer to add in corn syrup to thin it out rather than milk because it gives it a nice gloss. splenda is also an excellent sub for the sugar in the recipe.
i want to do this course to learn roses and other flowers- i’ve seen what my colleagues who’ve learned that have come up with and holy smokes, some excellent stuff.
this is a cake i made for my cousin’s 1st birthday… his mom calls him her little monkey. i also made little cupcakes to go with it.
