Cairo

I’m going to cairo soon. Any one been there? any tips?..Apart frm pyramids, any other place unmissable?..Any shughal for a 5 year old?

how unfair...i need to go too...any chance u can fit me in your suitcase?

Some of my mates have been, a few years ago, apart from the pyramids and the fact that its the most amazing place ever...

they didnt really have much to say

this pains me to say...but what the hey..i'l try anyway...Enjoy your trip!

My sister used to live there, but I haven't been there myself.

You should really see the Jamia al Azhar though. The Pyramids are not located in Cairo btw. They are a few kilometres outside the city.

Egypt is best enjoyed outside Cairo.

With a five year old, your best bet is to avoid the sightseeing bus, but when a taxi driver grabs you by the arm and begs you to let him show you around, negotiate with him, so at least one more destitute person can earn his bread. Traffic is horrific and desi-style wagons will stop in the middle of the road to hop on a swari.

Giza is an hour drive from Cairo – you will see many katchi abadis and blowing dust on the way. There are two giant pyramids there, a few small ones and the famous sphinx. It’s not as big as you may have imagined. For real taste of the pyramids go to El Faiyum – I haven’t been there yet. Many travellers go to Alexandria in the north and Luxor in the south for their ancient monuments, temples, resorts, and casinos or just to get away and relax. Hotels are not expensive compared to Western Europe.

The Egyptian museum is in central Cairo, right next to the Nile Hilton. Admission is free, but once inside, there is admission to the royal mummy room. Try to see it first if approaching closing time.

Travel light as you have to go through x-ray and metal detector every time entering your hotel. Most hotels can arrange a cruise on the Nile. Do not drink tap water – take peptobismol. Be prepared to hear a concert in Arabic all night. Carry Tylenol PM for a good nights sleep.

Hope this helps.

Start your sightseeing with a visit to the 'Pharaonic Village'.

This should be the first thing on your list, as it will give you a good background in to Egypts historic past.
