CAIR Important

I just got this and it was really disturbing that people are letting this go by. I think its really hurtful when young children are targeted as such. if any of you have the time, please email the distributers of the book about how wrong and racial the book is. It does no us no good to have a book like this been read out to our kids.

MIDDLE SCHOOL READER DEFAMES ISLAM

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 2/15/2000) - CAIR is warning
Muslim parents about
a middle school reading text that contains a number
of inaccurate,
offensive and stereotypical references to Muslims,
Muslim women,
Arabs, and Islam.

“The Terrorist,” written by Caroline B. Cooney (ISBN
0-590-63913-7)
and published by Scholastic Inc. (Nasdaq: SCHL),
deals with an
American student at a private school in London who
seeks revenge for
the death of her 11-year-old brother killed by a
package bomb. Its
back cover carries the statement: “This edition is
only available
for distribution through the school market.”

The book was brought to CAIR’s attention by a
concerned Muslim
parent whose daughter read it based on a list
provided by her
teacher.

A few examples of offensive content in “The
Terrorist:” (There are
many more examples available.)

Page 77 - “‘What country are you from, Mohammed?’
she asked.
‘Palestine.’ [said Mohammed] 'That’s not a
country…It’s Israel.
It’s been Israel since before my father was
born…Is Mohammed a
Palestinian who would throw a bomb?”

Pages 107 and 108 - Muslim girl named Jehran
speaking: “I will not
yet be sixteen. The man chosen for me is a general
in his fifties. I
will be his third wife. His is a traditional
household. I will be
forced to wear a black robe like my servant, and
have my face
covered by a solid veil with eye slits. I will not
be permitted to
leave my house. I will not be allowed books to read
or television to
watch or a radio to listen to…It is living
death…My money would
be his, and I would never be permitted to touch it.
I would obey my
husband always, no matter how painful or cruel or
wrong. I would
have no purpose except to give birth to sons. If I
had a daughter,
he would punish me and quickly get me pregnant
again.”

Page 111 - “Islam. You thought that religion was a
pact between you
and God, but it wasn’t…Men who hated women. Men
who wanted women
literally locked in their clothes and their homes.”

To top off this offensive and stereotypical
material, the author
reveals that “The Terrorist” was in fact the girl
who is trying to
escape the “living death” of a Muslim marriage. The
girl killed the
heroine’s brother just to obtain his passport. So
even the “good”
Muslims are bad.

In a letter to Scholastic President Richard
Robinson, CAIR asked
that the book be recalled because it is “targeted at
a captive
audience of impressionable middle school students”
who, unlike adult
readers, do not have a choice in what they read and
absorb.

In response to CAIR’s request, Scholastic’s Senior
Vice President of
Corporate Communication Judy Corman wrote in part:
“Taking the book
as a whole, as a novel is intended to be considered,
we believe the
book represents a contribution to the dialogue about
commonly held
attitudes and preconceived notions.” Scholastic is a
$1.2 billion
global children’s publishing and media company.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED: (As always, be firm,
but POLITE.)

  1. Contact Scholastic to express your concerns, as a
    Muslim parent,
about the negative impact this type of offensive and
    stereotypical
material has on your children and their classmates.

  1. Find out if “The Terrorist” is on the reading
    list used in your
child’s school. If it is, bring the stereotypical
    content to the
attention of school administrators. Muslim children
    should also
express their views about the impact this book could
    have on their
lives. Suggest alternate titles such “American
    Islam: Growing Up
Muslim in America” (ISBN 0802783430) or “Kiss the
    Dust” (ISBN
    0140368558).

  2. Obtain copies of CAIR’s 16-page booklet, “An
    Educator’s Guide to
Islamic Religious Practices,” for distribution to
    teachers and
    school administrators. ($3+S/H)

TALKING POINTS:

  1. Offensive material in a book used as assigned
    reading for
students is not the same as similar content in a
    book that would be
freely, and voluntarily, accessed by adults.

  2. The material concerning Islam’s alleged treatment
    of women is
    inaccurate as well as offensive.

Anchal - I'm afraid that you've missed the boat. I agree with you that these bad things happen, but, to equate Islam to it is ridiculous.
If you dont agree with me than read the Quran and Sunnah and if you are bent upon learning about Islam from the internet or from books published by Scholastic, then May Allah(SWT) help you and others like you.

Regards
Zman

zman i didnt equate Islam to anything
I said to punish those who make Islam their shields and commit such brutality

Anchal
i am not sure I understand what you are saying?

are you saying we should not bother protesting about a book such as the above been a staple part of a schools curriculum?

or are you saying that the ideas potrayed by the book represent the average muslim in america and hence they are an accurate representation of the system?

Perhaps you could clarify what you meant by "punnish those who do acts making Islam their shield rather then punishing those who write books bout them " and then we can discuss this issue further.

thanks

hmcq i was not referring to any of the above you mentioned
perhaps you didnt get my point

in your article there are references bout Muslim women being treated unfairly in the name of Islam...
innocent ppl killed in bombings which are organized in the name of Islam

there was this line "to topp off this offensive and stereotypical material .."

i am sorry but i dont agree .....women are treated badly ....ppl are killed for no reason other then that they arent Muslims

this projects the views that Islam is a religion which potrays hate and terrorism along with degrading females ......

you and I being muslims and knowing what Islam preaches are quite aware that this isnt true ......but the way "some ppl" act and make Islam their right to kill ....or degrad women gives the impression to the world that offensive and stereotypical material

so what i meant was instead of circulating such emails which wont be of any help punish those who have given the impression to the world that Muslims are basically terrorists and Islam preaches hate

i know ppl are ready to post up hadees and quotes from the quran about all the related stuff but that wont do .........one has to act in such a way to make Islam known to the world a religion of peace, brotherhood and harmony

yes those are good points in themselves. Yes women are not neccessarily treated well (and I am very strong opponent of the use of religion to force certain cultural ideas on people especially when those are not true representation of the religion --- see the married section for my thots on that) and yes there are people who would in the name of religion be willing to kill others without a thot. and Yes we should absolutley do everything that we can to prevent these things from happening.

However how much of this is based on what the media house show us everyday..... how much of our religion is precieved as what it is today because of what we are shown over and over again. Do you see the average muslim as someone who carries a bomb around with him ? Is the average male muslim an inhumane person who on getting married would immediately make his wife a virtual slave to him....

I personally dont think so. Yes we have a lot of issues to deal with but that does not mean we should let ourselves to be sterotyped by the media and those that dont know about the religion. Its the same as asking the BJP to write a book on Pakistans History for our students. You think that will be a fair history?

I agree with you in what you are saying but I think a lot of the sterotyping here is worng in that we get to see only one side of the issue. I for one would not want my kid to be reading a book that says all the stuff the above book says.

Look back at the Black revolution. before there were voting rights and equality for blacks they were assumed to be an inferior class of people. Why? beacause that is how they were potrayed by everyone else.

Same thing here. I am not saying there are no bad eggs amongst us but does that mean we should be potrayed by just those few bad eggs. CAIR is basically against discrimination against muslims. You should check out there website. They were part of the group that protested when Burger King set up shop in Jerusalem . they have also been very strongly involved in muslim related discrimination. and in this instance I do agree that the book should not be used as reading material for students.

I would be more than happy to hear your point of view. Do let me know what you think?
by the way you never did say if it would be acceptable for you to have your kid read such a book as literature.

hmcq

i will have no problem in having my kids read the book .....
firstly i am trying my best to teach them Islam
secondly they should be aware of mistreatments and unjustice carried out in the world in the name of Islam and should know when to rise to opression ......

I am very sure that if my kids are subjected to the book as their school text then they will have the knowledge to cross examine its content and thus explain the misconceptioins

but that wont do... one can talk all they can but its only when one acts that ppl believe ....

muslim women should be taught their rights...educated and should be installed with self confidence so they can stand to opression
but alas this doesnt happen girls are taught that they are mere things created to serve men
men mistreat women with their hearts content and no body gives a damn because the reason given is that Islam has give man his right to do so ....
here in the fora see how some males abuse the females with vulgar language ....
i would call them plain immatures who are parhay likhay jahil

Anchal
See i agree with what you are saying. Our kids should be taught thier rights especially the females. however, at the sme point I object to people stereotyping the religion. That is plain wrong and I am strongly against that. I see these two issues as connected but which can be dealt with separately , while from your first post, it seems prefer to not bother about the stereotyping but would want everyone to be educated. In that I suppose we differ.

As for having the text in my kids school, I would have to be very carreful. why ? cause at what age is a kid able to discern the truth from lies ? if we tell a kid that the teacher does not lie and then at the same time tell him not to beleive what the teacher is theaching , we only cause confusion for the kid. Yes if the kids in say grade 8 and is reading this text... yes then I would be confident that he/she would be able to make the right choice. its like deciding at what age is a kid capapble of been next to a fire and not burning oneself.

As for the teaching the women folks thier rights... yes absolutely, they should be taught that... That is a very important aspect of a womans life...but the two issues should not be cobined into one.
