Participate in Task Force on Needs of Muslim Students
Sunday, November 05, 2006 8:22 pm (Ottawa, Canada – Nov 5, 2006) - The Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CAN) is calling upon students, staff and faculty members in Ontario’s colleges and universities to participate in the Task Force on the Needs of Muslim Students. The Task Force, organized by the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), a 500 000 member student group, will be conducting informal hearings across Ontario campuses. The group is mandated to assess the needs of Muslim students, from prayer space to halal food, and to document instances of Islamophobia.
The initiative developed out of the CFS campaign against “Islamophobia, Anti-Semitism, and Racism,” in response to incidents of hate-based graffiti and posters targeting Muslim students at Ryerson University. Through the campaign, the CFS became aware of the challenges that Muslim students face daily with respect to religious observances.
The Task Force’s ten members come from a diverse range of experiences and backgrounds, allowing them to understand both the needs of Muslim students and Ontario’s post-secondary education system.
The group’s findings will be documented and release in an official report on March 21, 2007, the International Day to End Racism. The report will publicize successes in addressing the needs of Muslim Students and, in addition, make campus-specific and system-wide recommendations.
