Caffein VS Palpitation...how to go about it?

salaam dosto
hope N pray that you guys are doing great!

sorry for the long post in advance.

i’ve been a TEA-holic ever since i was a kid. for the last 20-25 years have been taking 10 cups a day on an average. i used to take a lot of sugar in my tea. 40 spoons a day at least plus more sugar in desserts and miThaaii. i stopped taking real sugar about 5 years ago when i was diagnosed with diabetes. i’ve been using artificial sweeteners ever since equivalent to real sugar [20 (1 g each) packages of sweetener].

recently, i’ve been experiencing palpitations at times during the day and at night when i lie down in bed to sleep for the night. i usually have several spells of palpitation, each lasting a few seconds but, thankfully, it’s mild in it’s severity. i talked to my family doctor who advised me to cut down on my tea and chocolate intake. i don’t consume chocolate so it’s not a problem. the problem is my TEA-holism. i tried successfully to cut it down to 7 cups a day. i can’t seem to reduce the consumption any further as i get headaches and feel lethargic. my doc also told me to take decaf tea instead. it tastes horrible and i don’t enjoy it one bit. :frowning:

one more thing…i cook my tea desii style [2/3 milk; 1/3 water]…this causes the tea bags to release more caffeine in my cuppa tea. :frowning: this is the reason i never drink tea anywhere outside my home and also i have to make my own tea…no one else can make the way i like…it has to be just RIGHT or else i won’t have it. i’m very picky when it comes to my kinda tea. :frowning:

ok, here is my question:

what should i do to cut down on my caffeine intake in light of the above problems**?**

please help someone who desperately needs help in this regard…should i go to TEA-holic Synonymous? cb:

thank you

regards

Re: Caffein VS Palpitation...how to go about it?

try switching to green tea, it has much less caffeine. you can add adrak, ilaichi, cinnamon to that as well. :)
Also, soda contains caffeine as well, so cut down on that too if you drink it.

Re: Caffein VS Palpitation...how to go about it?

KKF, give me your tea recipe. Qaafi achi hogi ke aap 7 cups peetay hain!!! :D

In all seriousness, you have to stop! 40 spoons a day sounds horrible. Glad you have cut down. I am a huge dessert and mithai fan as well. For the past 1 year, I got addicted to tea, since I learnt to make it well. And of course chai baghair shakar toh achi nahin hoti. I actually gained weight because of the extra sugar I was consuming twice a day!!! I realized it was time to stop and switch to milk and honey!

I know it is tough but you MUST force yourself to stop with the tea. Try to drink may be 4 cups now. And slowly in a few months, cut it down to 2 cups. If you really need the caffeine, drink green tea. My mother who is also a chai-holic like you, has green tea at night nowadays instead of normal chai. She does give in to chai when she is very tired, but is ok with green tea now.

So yes my plan for you. Take chai in the morning, afternoon and evenings have green tea at work, or when you are on the go. And have another cup of chai when you are home and relaxed and surfing GS. :P Do decrease the intake as the sugar is harmful for you.

Re: Caffein VS Palpitation...how to go about it?

Your palpitations may or may not be linked to tea consumption. If you've been having same tea consumptions for years and years, its less likely that it's the tea that's causing it. Palpitations can occur secondary to a plethora of things. Has your doctor checked your TSH?

Regardless, that's a lot of tea / artificial sweetners that you are consuming and you need to moderate that ASAP. You need to work on it slowly, decrease the number of cups per day gradually, maybe 1 less cup each week until you are down to 2-3 cups a day. Lethargy will improve with time, and there's always tylenol/advil for headaches. What do you do in ramzan when you can't drink that much?

Re: Caffein VS Palpitation...how to go about it?

KKF, you sound so much like me, regarding tea. I like it cooked very well and thick, but i dont use much sugar. I only drink at home and at work or during travel switch to coffee.

Episodic palpitation may not be related to coffee, you need to check ur sugar level during these episodes and if its OK you should do thyroid function test and EKG, and possibly a holter monitoring.

Re: Caffein VS Palpitation...how to go about it?

I have the same problem. I get palpitations whenever I have caffeine. I had already cut down on caffeine because I could not sleep at night otherwise. I have stopped taking the one cup of tea I used to take in the morning and drink non cafinnenated clear soda instead of the black ones. Chocolate does that to me too , not as much as tea unless I eat a lot and I also get headaches. There will be caffeine withdrawal but u will get used to it. I take a quarter cup of warm milk instead of tea in the morning. And yesI also started to get these things recently, never had these issues before but it can happen with time.

Re: Caffein VS Palpitation...how to go about it?

You should get checked out by the doctor why you have the palpitation just to be on the safe side. Anything in moderation is alright but ten cups is woww... And I love tea!!! Try cutting down your tea by a cup every few days. Start incorporating green tea into your diet but def get yourself checked out.

Bulimia seems to be an option.

O yaar what do you do during ramadhan then if you could not bring the tea consumption down under seven cups a day?

I say that switch to half caffeine/half decaf tea for at least three of your daily cups and slowly bring them up to full decaf. Then it will be easy for you to quit. Right now your problem is fifty percent caffeine addiction, and fifty percent tea addiction. Let's at least minimize the first addiction.

About ten years ago, I was like five cups of coffee a day. I hated myself during Ramadan as the month started falling during the time when days are getting longer and longer. I worked on my caffeine and now just one cup in the morning is all I need. During Ramadan, I drink that cup during sehri and that is it

Re: Caffein VS Palpitation...how to go about it?

have tea in the morning and then decaf coffee in the evening and have honey instead of sugar. i don't take sugar in my tea and coffee and it's been 5 years now.
