Cable vs DSL

In NJ does it make a significant difference if we have cable or dsl for broadband? DSL seems 15 dollars heaper than cable monthly.

Re: Cable vs DSL

Atlantis, I dont libe in NJ, but I can tell you overall you want to go with Cable. Less hassles, less service disruptions and better throughput.

Re: Cable vs DSL

In 3 years that I have been using DSL, not a single service disruption. However, by definition cable internet is faster than DSL, and with digital cable they have remediated the issue of slower speeds at peak evening times. Plus with cable internet, you don't need a local phone line (a requirement for DSL), so then you can also explore the possibility of cheaper VOIP services like Vonage.

Re: Cable vs DSL

Faisal, do u live right next to the exchange?
I will not go with Vonage yet, 911 is not available or they cannot find out where you are? You have to give them the address. This can be a serious issue for peopel concerned with security and medical needs.

Re: Cable vs DSL

I have had cable for a few years now and had one 2 day outage which turned out to be equipment fault. It's pretty fast and I have no intention of VOIP. The reason I asked is I saw some ad touting the DSL speeds have gone up and considering the diff in price I thought I could save some money.

How can I get real stats about speed?

Re: Cable vs DSL

I think DSL is pretty fast for normal use. I don't know if you plan to use your connection for any specific high-speed use, but downloading music, movies etc.. I have never felt a problem with DSL.

Kaleem... that may be true. I don't have Vonage etc, but I know many people who do. Someone was telling me that with their new features you can get pretty much similar 911 service as well.

some techie details here…

one major point to note frm this article is ‘at peak timings DSL outperformed cable during the “peak personal hours” of 5 PM to 11 PM. While bandwidth on the Net is ultimately always shared at some point, it seems that cable services remain more susceptible to the phenomenon than DSL services’.

if u r saving 15 dollars than go wit that.

Re: Cable vs DSL

You guys should get the panties out of a bunch. The difference between cable & dsl and peak times an unpeak are pretty much negligible. If you are trying to download a huge file (e.g. a cd iso) then its going to take forever if u have a T1 so u'd just learn to accept it.
Just go with the cheapest broadband available. What's a few 100 kbps between friends.

Re: Cable vs DSL

DSL has never given me any problem, it does not interfere in your telephone line operations since it works of a different carrier modulation.

Re: Cable vs DSL

Thx everyone. I think I’ll try dsl out - especially sinve I hate to be forced to buy cable tv if I want cable broadband! can you believe it? The cable company, on top of charging 15 dollars over dsl, is also telling me that of I don’t buy cable tv from them, my broadband will cost another 14 dollars!

So I have to either stop satelite tv and switch to cable or pay double for the same tv programs! what the heck is FCC doing?

Re: Cable vs DSL

^ huh? That must be an east coast thing. I have DirecTV and use cable only for High Speed Internet. Cable folks have never asked mo pay more or buy cable tv programming.

Faisal, having something close to 911 is close but no cigar. I want to be certain that if I have an emergency and I call 911, it is routed to the proper authority, not some third party company working for Vonage or some other carrier.

Re: Cable vs DSL

Cable is shared in your neighbourhood … if more people are using it then it might affect the speed.

P.S: I read this in a book I believe, don’t know if technology has changed
