Cable Internet Question

Does having a router (only for vonage phone service) make your internet speed slower? And I’ve heard that if you dont lock it or something (if u can, lemme kno), people with wireless internet can pick up your signal and make urs slower…can sum1 enlighten me on this, thanks.

Re: Cable Internet Question

Vonage does slow up your internet. It is bandwidth eater, no matter what they claim.

Re: Cable Internet Question

Sucks!

Re: Cable Internet Question

Actually you can control how much bandwidth Vonage takes by logging into the the Vonage router and throttle it down. But you will only be able to get in there if you connect to the PC port on the Vonage router. How do u have it connected? My setup is Cisco router then one cable to PC and another 2 Vonage.

Re: Cable Internet Question

So you are saying you have router b/w the vonage adaptor and the cable modem? Is this possible?

I have them in this order.

Cable Internet Modem - Motorola >> Vonage Motorola Adaptor >> NetGear Wireless router >> PC wired to NetGear router port/Notebook is connected to NetGear wireless

Slow performance is the biggest problem in this setup. However there is another problem, port forwarding that is not possible since vonage will not show actual cable IP address to the internal router, so the port forwarding is not possible since my router is behind the vonage adaptor.

Is there a workaround?

Re: Cable Internet Question

swap the vonage and router positionally

Re: Cable Internet Question

yes, i have a 4 port Cisco switch/router, so it connects to the Cable modem, then in the 4 ports i have:
a: vonage
b: server
c: Wifi AP
d:Cable going to media center.

This way Vonage doesn't control what badwidth i use.

Re: Cable Internet Question

So why Vonae recommends to have its adaptor the first device behind the cable modm? Why don't they show that Vonage can work with IP assigned by our internal router OR in other words, their adaptor can still be registered to their server even if it is behind our internal router. Do we need port forwarding or something in this senario?

If it works as you suggesting, my bandwidth and phone line hanging due to downloading issues will be resolved.

Re: Cable Internet Question

They recommend what they're comfortable with, I setup the way I was comfortable with. You don't need any port forwarding. Go home and give it a try, if it doesn't work you can always go back.

Re: Cable Internet Question

i am not a nw expert but wonder if they (vonage) have some qos stuff going on that could get untrustworthy if not directly from modem...

Re: Cable Internet Question

I've been using Vonage for about 3 years now, some times from a dialup internet connection. It works fine however you connect.

Re: Cable Internet Question

I will definetely give it a try and will let you know if it works or not. Can you tell me your Vonage adaptor model, just in case I need to call them for reference.

Re: Cable Internet Question

peripherally related question - I have verizon landline and verizon dsl. if I go for vonage (or verizon's own broadwing telephone service) can I cancel the land line or do I have to still keep it? If I have to keep it then what's the point buying vonage or broadwing?

Re: Cable Internet Question

There are open source firmwares that would allow you to control QoS on your router so it is not done by vonage.

Re: Cable Internet Question

I'm sure that if he was playing around with flashing firmware on his modem that he woudln't thow this issue at the merci of GS "experts".

Re: Cable Internet Question

hmmm i just have the router they provided, no vonage adapter or anything, just have the cable internet connected to the router, than the router into my pc, and also have phone line connected to it.

Re: Cable Internet Question

That vonage router is the adapter ustaad ji.

Re: Cable Internet Question

Thanks Tofi, I placed my router b/w cable modem and vonage adaptor. Works like a charm. Did heavy downloading for testing, vonage never chocked as it used to before. Thanks for the advise.

garampaani, if your DSL can't work without land line, then there is no use of getting Vonage. With some DSL vendor it is neccessory to have landline, some don't require it. Talk to Verizon, if they don't require landline, then discontiue it and signup for vonage. If they do, look for a cable internet and go with vonage. Otherwise stik with DSL/Landline.

Re: Cable Internet Question

waisay with vonage, have they solved the 911 emergency call dealio with home alarm system link

Re: Cable Internet Question

Yeah, they sorta have. Now for every number you get you have to put in an address where the phone is located. It still doesn't do it automatically tho. Better than nothing!
