Bye bye Kaif

He didn’t say bye, but I think very likely BCCI will say it.

What do you all think?

Re: Bye bye Kaif

 Yeh kiya laga rakha hai? Jahan nazar daalo, kabhi bye bye Jayasuriya, to kabhi bye bye Kaif. Chain sey nahin baithnay daina?

I’d think his time has come and gone, at least for now. Initially, reports were running that Venugopal Rao will be replacing him into the side, but in any case, most likely, Kaif is in a very bad patch at the moment. I would say provide a few more chances for him to get back into his normal game. If that is deemed as a failure, I’d reckon there is plenty of bench-strength left in the batting department on the sidelines for India.

Re: Bye bye Kaif

Isn't this his 2nd consecutive duck? Scores of 1, 46, 16, 8, 5, 0, 0, 4, 0, 0
He is no Ganguly, Sachin or Dravid to be kept in team for that long for being in "bad patch".

Re: Bye bye Kaif

  • When asked about Kaif in particular, Chappell harked back to his own horror-run in 1981-82. “I feel it’s more of a mental thing,” said Chappell. “The focus is not quite right, and the anxiety to succeed doesn’t help you either.”

*- “Both Kaif and Sehwag are very experienced,” he said. “Both have the skills to succeed and we will give both as many chances as we possibly can.”

-----------------------------------*

I fully agree with Chappell here. Even though Kaif has failed in recent times more than on a handful of ocassions, he still has the potential to stand besides the best India currently has to offer, and has done so numerous times in the past. Only thing lacking from his point of view is the lack of support, which, after providing enough chances by the selection team, could certainly boost his moral and confidence once again.

Re: Bye bye Kaif

I have followed Kaif's career closely.
I believe he is an example of what happens to a player if he is not handled properly.
At first he started out in the number 5/6 position. This is a very tricky position to be playing in one-dayers. You would , most of the time, come into bat after the 35th over and would be expected to get going right-away. And what happens in the process is that if you get out trying to slog a few times - suddenly your place in the side is in danger....adding to the insecurity.

Kaif has also been unlucky in other ways. Whenever he seemed like he was getting in a good groove with his batting, something happened and he had to be out of the team. In an ealier series , he had to to drop out on account of injury after he had done well. He was dropped from Test team to Pak only to accommodate Ganguly. He was dropped from the 2nd and 3rd test against England despite scoring 90+ in the first test - because Chappel decided he wanted to play 5 bowlers and made Kaif the sacrificial lamb - not Tendulkar, not Sehwag.

Bottomline - Kaif has always had to play with a great deal of insecurity for one reason or the other.

The way forward for him would be to give him an extended chance up the order. Since India can't seem to find a good opener - I say let Dravid open and Kaif can go first down. At least give the man a decent run.

Re: Bye bye Kaif

Kaif is going to get decent run Some1. Like me and you, BCCI,Chappel and Indian team has great faith in him. He is just short of one score in ODI and then we will see run flowing thoruhg his bat.

Re: Bye bye Kaif

Good analysis, as well as the above recommendation. I'd also reckon he could prove his value up the order and leave the tail-enders to do their "normal" slogging work. Apart from this, he could be very handy alongside Dravid and anchor the innings, which will play a more important role for him in the long-run.

Re: Bye bye Kaif

Exactly.... kaif brings much needed Sanity to Indian batting lineup which is full of strokemakers like Sehwag,Yuvraj,Raina,Sachin ,Dhoni & Irfan. We need someone like him in the team. Also he is kinda of guy who saves 20-25 run in fielding anyway. He is one of the guy who keeps Dressing room fun and in high spirit. He is well liked. :D

Re: Bye bye Kaif

Anyway back to the topic. I personally think that Kaif deserves a fair deal just like what Yuvraj got.
Both of them are immensely talented players, wasted in their earlier years just because they couldn't enter into the side becasue of some "reserved spots".
In case of Yuvraj, luck favoured him and finally he got a stable spot in the side, which by the way he deserved. Hope to see that happening with Kaif as well otherwise it will be a shame to see such a talent go to waste

Re: Bye bye Kaif

I dont think so they can afford to drop or say bye-bye to Kaif yet, yes he is not performing with the bat currently but he is a good player, a very good player and he will come good.

Re: Bye bye Kaif

some very good points above...i agree
but also realistically its getting difficult to get a spot in the indian side and with all the new-comers getting a chance AND performing well, its hard to keep the peace of mind when ur not doing well in the middle...so tough times ahead for kaif, will be a good judge of his character, atleast chappell has taken the initiative to support sehwag and kaif and give them a little confidence

No

Re: Bye bye Kaif

One of the aspects that needs to be differentiated from India's point of view is the recognition of quality players, those who are currently playing in the side and those who, unfortunately, have been forced to place their one foot out the door (for one reason or another) whilst making it easy for the selection committee in terms of picking and choosing. Kaif is a very exceptional player, and many will agree to that. Instead of constant up-bringing of younger cricketers and re-shaping the team on every corner possible, Kaif should be one individual who has showed alot of heart, determination and character on several previous ocassions, and it is now time to go back and recognize his brilliant past knocks. At least provide him until the end of the ODI series, all seven (7) matches, and see if he comes back in his form. Maybe he will, in bits and pieces, and maybe he will score a big one very soon (as fair_&_balance alluded to), but it is on the cards. It is not the question of if, but rather a question of when it will come, and rest assured, when that time comes, he will regain his well-deserved status back in the side.

In essence, I agree with your post. :)

Re: Bye bye Kaif

to me, Kaif is Pathan without the bowling (and a a severely-out-of-form-with-the-bat version of Pathan to boot).

i see very little difference between their batting abilities.

i think Kaif probably has the worst luck of any legitimate talent on the team, but there is only so much failure the BCCI is going to allow for a 2nd-tier member of the side.

Re: Bye bye Kaif

Guess Agarkar is 1st-tier then ?

Re: Bye bye Kaif

Severely out of form ?

Let's put things in perspective here pal. He scored 91 a few weeks ago against England....scored an unbeaten century last week in the side game at Jaipur against England. Was RUN OUT in the first one dayer. So in effect he has failed in 2 matches - and he is suddenly severely out of form.

Infact, until Yuvraj scored that blistering century yesterday, Kaif wasn't doing any worse than him in this current series. And Kaif did not even get to play as much as Yuvraj in the Test Series.

Go pick on Sehwag or Tendulkar, if you have to.

Re: Bye bye Kaif

Please Dont.

Atleast leave poor tendulkar alone, it seems 16 years have just been forgotten...the man is stuggling with injuries and confidence, give him a little time...and atleast for me, his presence in the side is more than i can ask for :)
