‘Emotional’ Jayasuriya announces Test retirement

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lanka’s highest run-scorer Sanath Jayasuriya has said he would retire from Test cricket next week to concentrate on the one-day game.
The 36-year-old left-handed opener told AFP Friday he would make his final Test appearance in the second match against Pakistan starting in Kandy on Monday.

“I thought about it long and hard and decided that’s it. It’s a very emotional moment, but I guess every good thing has to come to an end,” he said.
Jayasuriya handed in his letter of resignation to Duleep Mendis, chief executive officer of Sri Lanka Cricket, on Friday.

However, he said he would still be available for selection for next year’s World Cup. The veteran of 101 Tests is Sri Lanka’s most prolific batsman in both forms of the game. But injuries have kept the all-rounder out of the side on a few occasions in the past six months.

After missing the three-match one-day series against Pakistan with a thigh strain he just managed six and 13 runs in the drawn first Test in Colombo.
A former Sri Lanka captain, Jayasuriya’s absence in the top of the order will be missed, but it will allow him to fully concentrate on one-day cricket ahead of the World Cup.

Jayasuriya made his Test debut in 1991 against New Zealand in Hamilton but only became a permanent fixture on the side after a thrilling century against Australia in Adelaide where he famously carted Shane Warne around the park.
He won the Player of the Tournament award in the 1996 World Cup won by Sri Lanka and, together with Romesh Kaluwitharana, modernised ODI cricket with his audacious stroke play in the first 15 overs.
He was appointed captain in 1999, succeeding Arjuna Ranatunga, and quit the captaincy in 2003.

Jayasuriya prepares to quit the game having scored 6,599 Test runs with 14 hundreds at an average of 41:76. His useful left arm spin has got him 92 Test wickets and 273 ODI scalps.

He is also one of four players – along with Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Inzamam ul Haq – to have completed 10,000 ODI runs.

So probably next Test against Pakistan will be his last one.

Retirement is a always a very emotional moment in any professional athletes' life...its like leaving something that you love darely, not because you want to,but at some point in life you have to.

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

Absolutely! :)

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

Yes, true. Atleast he is not retiring because he was dumped for few series.

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

Sad day for cricket. He revolutionized ODI cricket in 1996. Magnificent player.

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

He is a great player..he says will be available for ODIs till the worldcup.
Wish him great luck a great cricketer.

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

he is not gona play test matches nemore?:bummer:

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

His impact was greater in ODIs. In that format he is one of the pioneers of post 1996 approaches to one day cricket.

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

What exactly is the point in retiring from Test Matches but not ODIs ?

Considering the amount of ODIs that are being played, this can hardly be called retiring. Did Jaisurya want to pre-empt the selectors in dumping him from the Test Squad.

It is as if I were to announce that I will retire from the Khail Khelari Forum but will continue to post in all the other forums. Does it even make sense ?

Also if match-fitness is the reason, ODIs need more physical agility than Test Matches.

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

You have a valid point LBGoogly.

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

Some people prefer to play Tests only, he likes to play ODIs only for now, so whats the issue? Shane Warne plays Tests only where you have to bowl/field for almost 1.5 days usually then again 1-1.5 days within 1-3 days which is not as easy as it might seem considering the weather of Sri Lanka.

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

I would call it post 1992 approach. It was started actually by brilliant new zealand captain Martin Crowe, when he sent Mark Greatbatch to open the innings and thrash the bowlers all over the place. That was the beginning of era of new approach to first 15 overs in ODI's

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

Jaysuria is a great player but then "har kamaal raa zuwaal"

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

The Cricketing world losing one its pioneers. Sad day for SL fans and others but the best thing is to retire with dignity rather than your nation thrashing you out. Considering this, I think Jayasuriya did impeccably well to retire from Tests so he can keep goin in ODIs. One of the best players in all time records.

how true of u.aakhir such zubaan par aa hi jaata hai.same thing u do when i post at kk:D

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

Greatbatch did actually start the concept of pinch hitting in the first 15 overs in WC 1992, but I guess it was the pair of Jayasuria along with Kaluwitharana and their pinch hitting prior to WC 1996 and than in 1996 which left the ever lasting impression. It was after them that players actually started to follow this trend.

Re: Bye Bye Jayasuria! (Tests)

Jayasuriya to quit International cricket completely after World Cup '07.
