In 2025, India to Pass China in Population, U.S. Estimates

Published: December 15, 2009

India will become the world’s most populous country in 2025, surpassing China, where the population will peak one year later because of declining fertility, according to United States Census Bureau projections released Tuesday.

The bureau suggests that the projected peak in China, 1.4 billion people, will be lower than previously estimated and that it will occur sooner. With the fertility rate declining to fewer than 1.6 births per woman in this decade from 2.2 in 1990, China’s overall population growth rate has slowed to 0.5 percent annually.

In contrast, India’s 1.4 percent growth rate is being driven by a fertility rate of 2.7 births per woman.

The bureau’s International Data Base projects that China’s labor force will peak at 831 million — 24 million more workers than today — in 2016. That is because the number of newcomers to the labor force in their early 20s is expected to start declining in 2011 after reaching 124 million.

In India, the number of new entrants to the labor force is expected to reach 116 million in 2024 before decreasing.

China and India alone account for 37 percent of the world’s population of about 6.8 billion. Every minute, the bureau’s estimates, 250 people are born worldwide and 107 die, for an increase of more than 75 million annually.

By the time the 21st century is a quarter over, the bureau estimates, the population of the United States will be more than 350 million. The United States fertility rate, about 2.1 births per woman, is higher than in most developed countries, in part as a result of higher birthrates among immigrants.

After China and India, the most populous countries are, in order, the United States, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Russia and Japan.

The worldwide population estimates include more than 11 million people over the age of 90 and more than 326,000 centenarians.

More boys are being born than girls, but women begin to outnumber men among people in their late 40s.

correct...we indians have two basic entertainments....hindi cinema and making love.......

Re: By 2025 India to Pass China in Population

Unemployment undermines the economic and social stability of Indian society.

Over the next decade some millions of Indians will be 18 and younger. If these young Indians are not educated or given job opportunities they would be forced into the cities that will become even more overcrowded and violent-prone; facing poor job prospects; and adrift amidst a society rife with increasingly radical movements like the Maoist movemet, the makings of a perfect storm are being put in place. What can be done to prevent this volatile mixture from blowing up?

I hope Indians awake and put the country in the right direction. Young Indians need challening opportunities to succeed.

Congrts Indians! Go India!

Re: By 2025 India to Pass China in Population

India vs China Economy

Making an in depth study and analysis of India vs. China economy seems to be a very hard task. Both India and China rank among the front runners of global economy and are among the world’s most diverse nations. Both the countries were among the most ancient civilizations and their economies are influenced by a number of social, political, economic and other factors. However, if we try to properly understand the various economic and market trends and features of the countries, we can make a comparison between Indian and Chinese economy.

Going by the basic facts, the economy of China is more developed than that of India. While India is the 12th largest economy in terms of the exchange rates, China occupies the third position. Compared to the estimated $1.209 trillion GDP of India, China has an average GDP of around $7.8 trillion. In case of per capital GDP, India lags far behind China with just $1016 compared to $6,100 of the latter. To make a basic comparison of India and China Economy, we need to have an idea of the economic facts of the countries.

Facts India China
GDP around $1.209 trillion - around $7.8 trillion
GDP growth 6.7% - 9.1%
Per capital GDP $1016 - $6,100
Inflation 7.8 % - -1.2 %
Labor Force 523.5 million - 807.7 million
Unemployment 6.8 % - 4.3 %

If we make the analysis of the India vs. China economy, we can see that there are a number of factors that has made China a better economy than India. First things first, India was under the colonial rule of the British for around 190 years. This drained the country’s resources to a great extent and led to huge economic loss. On the other hand, there was no such instance of colonization in China. As such, from the very beginning, the country enjoyed a planned economic model which made it stronger.

Agriculture

Agriculture is another factor of economic comparison of India and China. It forms a major economic sector in both the countries. However, the agricultural sector of China is more developed than that of India. Unlike India, where farmers still use the traditional and old methods of cultivation, the agricultural techniques used in China are very much developed. This leads to better quality and high yield of crops which can be exported.

Liberalization of the market

In spite of being a Socialist country, China started towards the liberalization of its market economy much before India. This strengthened the economy to a great extent. On the other hand, India was very slow in embracing globalization and open market economies. While India’s liberalization policies started in the 1990s, China welcomed foreign direct investment and private investment in the mid 1980s. This made a significant change in its economy and the GDP increased considerably.

Difference in infrastructure and other aspects of economic growth

Compared to India, China has a much well developed infrastructure. Some of the important factors that have created a stark difference between the economies of the two countries are manpower and labor development, water management, health care facilities and services, communication, civic amenities and so on. All these aspects are well developed in China which has put a positive impact in its economy to make it one of the best in the world. Although India has become much developed than before, it is still plagued by problems such as poverty, unemployment, lack of civic amenities and so on. In fact unlike India, China is still investing in huge amounts towards manpower development and strengthening of infrastructure. India vs China Economy

Re: By 2025 India to Pass China in Population

special care needs to be taken in UP and bihar. These two states are pain in the *** . what i have read is in 2050 the population will stabalize and then will start to decline.

India will overtake China as the fastest-growing economy in the world. China will start ageing and suffering from a declining workforce, and will be forced to revalue its currency. So its growth will decelerate, just as Japan decelerated in the 1990s after looking unstoppable in the 1980s. Having become the world’s second-biggest economy, China’s export-oriented model will erode sharply - the world will no longer be able to absorb its exports at the earlier pace. Meanwhile, India will gain demographically with a growing workforce that is more literate than ever before. The poorer Indian states will start catching up with the richer ones. This will take India’s GDP growth to 10% by 2020, while China’s growth will dip to 7-8%.

India to overtake China in 2020: Swaminathan Aiyar - India - The Times of India

India will become the largest English-speaking nation in the world, overtaking the US. So, the global publishing industry will shift in a big way to India. Rupert Murdoch’s heirs will sell his collapsing media empire to Indian buyers. The New York Times will become a subsidiary of an Indian publishing giant.

In the 2000s, India finally gained entry into the nuclear club, and sanctions against it were lifted. By 2020, Indian companies will be major exporters of nuclear equipment, a vital link in the global supply chain. So, India will be in a position to impose nuclear sanctions on others.

India, along with the US and Canada](India to overtake China in 2020: Swaminathan Aiyar | India News - Times of India), will develop new technology to extract natural gas from gas hydrates - a solidified form of gas lying on ocean floors. India has the largest gas hydrate deposits in the world, and so will become the biggest global producer. This will enable India to substitute gas for coal in power generation, hugely reducing carbon emissions and making Jairam Ramesh look saintly.

India will also discover enormous deposits of shale gas in its vast shale formations running through the Gangetic plain, Assam, Rajasthan and Gujarat. New technology has made the extraction of shale gas economic, so India will become a major gas producer and exporter. Meanwhile, Iran’s mullahs will be overthrown, and a new democratic regime will usher in rapid economic growth that creates a shortage of gas in Iran by 2020. So, the Iran-India pipeline will be recast, but in reverse form: India will now export gas to Iran.

More and more regions of India will demand separate statehood. By 2020, India will have 50 states instead of the current 28. The new states will not exactly be small. With 50 states and a population of almost 1.5 billion, India will average 30 million people per state, far higher than the current US average of 6 million per state.

China, alarmed at India’s rise, will raise tensions along the Himalayan border. China will threaten to divert the waters of the Brahmaputra from Tibet to water-scarce northern China. India will threaten to bomb any such project. The issue will go to the Security Council.

Islamic fundamentalists will take over in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The US will withdraw from the region, leaving India to bear the brunt of consequences. Terrorism will rise in India, but the economy will still keep growing. How so? Well, 3000 people die every year falling off Mumbai’s suburban trains, and that does not stop Mumbai’s growth. Terrorism will bruise India, but not halt its growth.

Re: By 2025 India to Pass China in Population

eeew...there are already too many indians in the world....and now more of them...yukkk

The Times of India should be taken with a grain of salt. Better yet a pitcher of salt!

Couple of points.
China has VAST amounts of territory. With a population rate being stable, there is ample room for most of the people in country.
India has far less territory then China, and has a population boom. With limited resources, how the heck is India going to feed the additional population? Even today we hear of growing water instability. A single drout anywhere is enough to cause starvation even today. Imagine when they have additional Millions!

If China needs to increase it population, I can simply turn on the tap, and allow 2 births! And with the money they have, they can easily improve their education and create a far more competitive populous.
Recently they have been saying that India is falling behind China in the number of English speakers.
‘China has more English speakers than India’ - Worldnews.com](http://article.wn.com/view/2009/11/20/China_has_more_English_speakers_than_India/)
Is China speaking English to beat Indian IT? - CIOL News Reports

India still struggles to educate its population, relatively few people have benefited from the IT boom. So how is India going to educate the additional Millions if it already has a hard time?
Whats to prevent companies from going to China if they have more english speaker with better education?!?!

India may rise, but it wont rise like China. With Indian coruption the way it is, I think with a larger economy, disparity will only increase.

Re: By 2025 India to Pass China in Population

Re: By 2025 India to Pass China in Population

^haha i don't see how that is going to help stabilize indian population

Well such things happen in war my friend. India has had its share. Your history is one of violence.

But I can guarantee you one thing, this shall pass in Pakistan.

You Indians on the other hand will always be wretchedly poor, dying of hunger and wallowing in illiteracy...
Couple that with your inherent violence of your society and youget the picture:)

Go worry about your problems, we will be fine.

lol... Unless someone bombs India with contraceptive pills..:)

i was just telling u abot the latest score

Agreed. Unchecked growth spells doom if opportunities do not keep pace with it.
