Any Canadian Guppy here who has bought a car States-side?
I’ve heard you could save up to 6k doing that…any truth to that? What would be involved with buying a car in the States?

Yes, you’ll save a huge amount. Saved $16,000 on a Subaru Tribeca. $31,000CAD in USA. 47,000CAD in Canada.
Stay to NAFTA cars. Also double check your warranty. Subaru honours the American warranty in Canada. Most Toyota/Honda/GM/Ford dealerships in the northern states simply will not sell a car to a Canadian - its a policy. Go further south and you’ll be fine.
Go stateside and buy a car with intent to export. Do not pay state taxes. Get export papers in check, get temporary insurance, get temporary license (most states have 3 day licenses available). Drive to border. At border hand over RIV papers. Prove ownership. Prove insurance. Pay $200 in RIV fees. If car not from Nafta, pay 6.1% duty. Go home. Apply for local plates. Pay CDN taxes on car. Save thousands.

There is some leg work involved like actually going state side…getting temporary insurance for the ride… but it’s minimal. All in all, it’ll cost less than $200 to get the car across the border back into Canada.
