Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

So, I might be in the market after all to get a new vehicle. I have looked at Toyota Avalon, but I am leaning towards mid-size crossover like Ford Edge (6 ft+ here).

I have a Honda Accord and it has its share of repairs from oxygen sensors, exhaust (gvien unless you replace the standard one) to radiators and even the front axle (noise in shoes). I haven’t had rust yet but the paint has come off pretty much on the roof and chipping elsewhere but that could be just being 15 years old.

I have been reading about Ford Edge and have been liking it. There have generally been good reviews though there are some bad ones with reliability reviews and then inane ones like SUV won’t heat up the ice to melt on windshield unless you drive it.

Has anyone here have had any experience with Fords? I have contacted dealers and one of them was telling me that they offer VIP pricing if anyone knows about how much truth could be in it.

I have heard good things about Subaru and even Volvo (4wd in cars), but then europeans are expensive to maintain and my aunt’s has had so many problems that allah maaf karay. I can live without 4wd but my main concern is that with traction + ABS and a higher clearance, I would be better off in the snow than now in my non-ABS car with all-weather tires.

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

PS I have also looked at Venza and Pilot (don't know what would Honda's response be? CR-Z in mid size). Pilot just feels too big and not to mention is more expensive as well.

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

Ford has improved a lot in recent years but still I don't know I would never buy one except mustang and trucks. Why aren't you looking towards Japanese because they're better in every aspect than their American counterparts. Subaru is a good choice and 2014 Nissan Rogue is out so you can consider it too.

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

p.s Hyundai Tuscon is another alternative.

We have a Lincoln, which is a fancier Ford of course. We are pretty happy with that. My other car is Chevy Impala, and I am so impressed with the car that if I ever go back to midsize sedan, I would probably buy an impala.

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

It must be a newer impala, as my brother's friend leased one 10 years back and it was more trouble than it was worth it. I guess the government input did improve the company?

MyFord Touch aside (or mylincoln touch for you), how has lincoln treated you for repairs and such? I have been reading horrible stories about the body control module draining the battery (controls power windows, mirrors etc) as the fuse for the charging is always open. I guess that it has something to do with the fact that Ford would allow you to plug in your cell phone to the cigarette lighter while you have to put in the key in other cars to unlock the power there. Ford used to be in the top 10 but now it isn't even in the list since the last 4-5 years.

I have been looking at the Nissan Pathfinder as well. Toyota is also back on the radar (Venza) but it seems that it is more expensive. I saw a recall today but at least according to Consumer Reports, Toyota is number one for reliability.

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

But Venza is cheaper then the Pathfinder but I like the new bold design of Pathfinder.

My Impala is 2005, so not really a newer model. I have 100k on it. Horn was the only thing that stopped working, and once the a.c. coolant drain clogged. Those are the only two repair work in last 9 years.

I have not had any repair issues on the Lincoln, yet. It’s a 2010 model and has about 50k on it.

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

So, i am still looking for a new SUV and foresters are hard to get due to a lower supply at least for some dealers here.

I am looking at 2013 and perhaps 2012 models (don't want to go too old), so what kind of mileage should be good? 20k for 2012?

Plus, other than toyota, has anyone have had used any re-certified vehicles from other manufacturers and what was your experience regarding reliability of the said vehicles?

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

Bought my new SUV over the weekend. Well, not new as it is pre-owned but still an upgrade from my old car.

Now, waiting time for the old one to be sold... :(

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

Which one you bought?

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

I just totaled third time my new vehicle last month...in last 3 years. Not my faults.

First one: By my maid/cook.

Second one just got burned to the ground, I barely got out of it...only 30k just had service and company could not find reason.

Third one, got in to roadside fence where there was no sign of construction.

Insurance company not happy. :(

Looking for another new one now....

Speaking of sales agent experience: They love me... :D

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

Damn! You must be rich then . Anyways by Allah's blessing you're safe and sound and that's what matters otherwise cars come and go. Drive safe bro. :)

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

Forester.

Diwana, you are in Pakistan right? By company not being happy, I guess it means that they were company cars??

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

Subarus are good reliable cars and there is one on my list too but it's gonna be an old one.

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

Thank you Khan Sahab;

Its not about being rich bhai,… I got money back from insurance company each time since they were fully insured.

Last vehicle was so badly damaged that body shop people kept asking, how was the driver survived.

Shukar AH. No problem.

Except the first one, yes, the last two were my company/corporation cars. But they were fully insured so insurance company was not happy.

Congrats on your vehicle.

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

Subaru! Awesome choice.

I used to have the Imprezza WRX those flat engines are among the very best.

Currently saving my pennies for either Audi or Mercedes... kind of wish I had a Subaru again but the insurance for them has gone up a lot since all the crazies love em :D

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

Subaru WRX is an awesome car better if it's an STI version ;). I know insurance is high on those because most of them end up in the hand of tuners.

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

Audi Q7 is good choice, but has very small screen. Good thing is that it has navigation screen right in-front of the wheel.

Mercedes what model? Mercedes GL450 or 550 are good for being powerful and having smooth ride. Their navigation still needs to be upgraded. No touch screen at least in 2013 model and perhaps even in 2014 models. Only recently they got music streaming...the newer 2014 model. Their 2013 model had no music streaming and Bluetooth has muffled sound. Hard drive reads slow.

BMW X-5 (2014) is better choice for the money. You just have to be able to use joystick like old Atari video game. Again, like other German cars, navigation is useless. But ride is good.

Porche Cayenne has very smooth ride. Better touch screen and good navigation system. Still behind new technology like no hard drive storage or only few models with key-less entry, driver's assist or touch start.

Even the sales people will tell you Porche works only on Engine technology but not on customer needs inside the cabin. Too many buttons inside and all very close to each other.

Lexus 570 is over priced. Funny back door like a barn, very little cabin space. But has great smooth ride.

Cadillac Escalade is coming with huge extended size and best electronic features one can think of..all touch controls...very impressive.. in 2015. But overpriced for being completely redesigned.

Re: Buying a vehicle / Dealer Experience

Not sure if it is appropriate to talk about one specific vehicle, but do not buy Mercedes 450GL 2012. Problems after problems in electronics and as many German vehicles (perhaps exception of BMW) .......are way behind the electronic technology and designing vehicles for drivers needs... Mercedez takes a crown for being very behind in this kind of technology.

You take it to dealer for one problem, another problem comes up next day. Cheap electronic system,.. and user unfriendly navigation system inside.

Very slow hard drive and card reader. Takes forever to load long list of music files and does not give any meaningful information to driver or owner.

Just like idiot Microsoft Windows products...even worse.

I know those who have dealt with Microsoft Windows over the years what I mean. There are jokes around internet for this issue. :)
