What are the best laptops out there?
Are ASUS and Lenovo Laptops any good?

Don't buy this. I still have it and it gave me so many problems. First the trackpad stopped working, then DVD/CD slot didn't work, then I had a black screen. It was awful. Their customer service was terrible too. Every time I called they connected me to an Indian Cell center. After several calls I got hold of someone in Headquarter in texas and after sending my laptop via Fed Ex and it being there a month, when I got back, the same problem started again. They didn't even fix it.
Don't buy Lenovo. If you really want to go with lenovo, stick to thinkpad brand, everything else is crap

I go by the configurations and features I want then I google prices and buy the cheapest one with all the features I want. I have bought more than a dozen laptops in last 18 years and was never disappointed with any brand of laptop. I make it a point to buy extended warranty for laptops and I had to use that only twice.

I didnt see CD-ROM up there so u may hv to get it seperately. One of mine had the same thing

I had a lenovo and it was a beast. I dropped some tea on the keyboard and usb port and I though the computer was toast. Took it to Fry's and after a day (they were running behind) it was turned on and working. Apparently it had a fuse that shut down power to stop any further damage to the computer. Compare that to the hp dv line where my touch buttons would disappear after 2 hours (30 minutes no volume on touch buttons).
Unless things are changing, I thought that Lenovo basically took IBM's products and started selling the under its name with minimal changes. I recommend lenovos and my brother bought a thinkpad and aside from the small trackpad, it has been rock solid for him.
If indian tech support is a problem, then stay away from DELL. They actually harass you if you accidentally call their online sales people. They were so clueless that they were pricing SSD and HDD in the price and I was like you don't even have a two bay system so how would this work? :D Dell was also the only laptop where the time would reset after each shut down, so I am thinking that the small battery that they have for this in the computer was dead.
Alienware is another story by itself but they are expensive.

I spilled entire cup of tea on my lenovo laptop as well.. I thought its all done but luckily only one pair of left/right click behind scrollbar got disfunctional. I manage to work without it since there is an extra pair given above scrollbar as well and and also we can work with wireless mouse

Just an FYI: Dell has a 2 bay system. I have one from work where I have 2 hard drives installed into my system. I have had this system for 3 years and never had a single issue.

It was actually alienware (owned by dell like lexus to toyota) so there was no way that they could fit in a hdd and an ssd..

Avoid Dell and HP, both are big disappointment.
These days Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and Yoga 3 Pro are big hit. Both are nice machines, I saw Yoga 2 pro of my colleague and was impressed with it. Remember to check out Pro series, there are simple Yoga 2 and 3 as well but not as good.

I think if you would go for the pro/ultra machines on HP and Dell they wont disappoint you. They are one of the best machines I have ever worked with. I used to have a Thinkpad back in the day from work and even though it was a pro machine it didnt work like one.
There are some machines within HP, dell and lenovo that would work and some wont. If you can spend some money I would always vote for a mac book pro with a warranty.

It is but also needs warranty. I have personally witnessed my friends walking into an apple store with a bad system and walking out with a brand new one replaced.
My brother in law bought an Asus. Its been in for repairs twice in 9 months.

Get Macbook Pro or even an Air if you dont mind the price, or get any other brand with a decent CPU and SSD. If its for normal usage scenarios get a Ultrabook (Any brand, almost all are equal, Samsung makes some good Ultrabooks, Series 9), if you need any gaming capabilities, get anything with a decent dedicated graphics card. I would say an Intel 4th Gen CPU at 2+ Ghz + 8GB RAM + 128 or 256 GB SSD (Buy one with an SSD, mechanical HDD is the biggest bottleneck these days) will be good.

I bought a samsung ativ 9 for my dad, but beware that due to software BIOS blocks, you can't install Win7 on win8 machines.
Do any computer geeks have a solution for that? I have Win7 ultimate but my bootable disk just wouldn't boot at startup to install 7.

I have one HP 15 inch laptop, and worst performance. New laptop runs like a flying horse but after a while same problem and heating issues.

It should be the new Secure Boot with a new UEFI firmwares, disable that or make a UEFI compatible USB windows 7 boot disk to install windows 7 on it, but why you want to install Windows 7? Windows 8 is just an optimized windows 7 with that fancy start screen, install a classic start menu and boot directly in to the desktop, you have your windows 7, but better optimized.
