Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

Should do. I've had my current Vaio just short of 3 years and its still going strong.

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

phatima, i have the Dell XPS 1530, it's v nice. Good for people who use graphics program and play games regularly. If it's in your budget go for it. can't go wrong with a DELL.

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

I'm a huge dell fan. I've had one for over 3 years and it worked like a charm. 12.2 inch screen, 1.8GHz P4, 80gig HDD, DVDRW, WiFi, and i don't remember what else...cost around $700 back then.

Vaio would last. They're like toyotas, literally! If you want portability try Dell (Economic compared to Vaio), if you want Durability try Sony, Although it might cost you a little more than others.

Both are good though.

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

Who cares what colour it is. Get something with a decent reliability + warranty.

For other college students that just type stuff, then there’s nothing better than a Asus Eee. Is puny, reliable and costs less than $500. A 8.9inch screen will be launched soon so I’ll be selling my old 7 incher if anyone wants it :D.

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

is it your mac (besides that Asus Eee):D?

and excuse me sir, but puny is no stuff good option for students.

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

My company gave me this computer. Its very solid/compact machine.
Not bad choice at all. But its more like a serious ppl computer.

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

If I may butt in:
This is the notebook I’m using these days.
I can only suggest this to buy.
But I recommand 3 GBs for Vista and 7200rpms for the HDD.

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

I care what color it is. =]

Annndd I want something small but not too small otherwise it won’t be powerful/durable enough. 13-15 inches is what I’m going for.

7-inches is soooo tiny! cute laptop.

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

So it's between Dell XPS, Dell Latitude, and the Sony Vaio...

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

go for Dell XPS

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

But the Sony Vaio is pink. :<

I think I'm gonna check out these laptops at like Circuit City or Best Buy tomorrow so I can see them before buying it online. It will give me a better idea of what they look like.

Newer Dell`s are known to lose their composer in year or so.
I believed they are made in malaisia.

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

hehehe
No one won wins over a pink laptop. What was all that hassle for ?

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

XPS is generally pricier. If it fits in your budget range and you are ok with its weight, then its probably a great choice. I love Latitude 4xx series for their light weight. Latitude 6xx series have built-in DVD drive and are bulkier and heavier.

I personally never liked Sony Vaio series. Usually over-priced, and full of crapware. But if pink color is so important for you, then go for it. More than likely you can get laptop covers for pretty much any machine that will give it a color of your choice. I saw some pretty shades of laptop covers for Apple MacBook at Fry's the other day. I am guessing you can get one for other brands too.

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

What's the difference between XPS and Latitude? (besides the design/style)

Is XPS worth the extra money or is it just the same as Latitude?

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

XPS is Dell's higher end line-up. Specs are generally better, and the exterior is different and more stylish. Obviously it is more pricier. I think at one time, XPS was targetted more for gamers, thus the higher end specs (better graphics card, more RAM etc). Now its probably more mainstream.

Inspiron is Dell's bread and butter line-up. Affordable and bland. You can spec it up, but its designed for home users, who are more inclined not to carry the computer all that much. Generally bulkier and heavier.

Latitude is Dell's line-up for lightweight laptops, more targetted towards businesses and those who carry their computer a lot. You can get similar specs, but its usually lighter and more compact.

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

seems like you have already narrowed down to Dell or Sony Vaio. Both in my opinion are good choices. i have a Sony Vaio VGN T250 which i bought over 3 yrs ago. i have had no problems whatsoever since then..it is pricey but its worth it, IMO. at the time i was looking, my main thing was that it has to be small/light so it is easy to move around but there should be no compromise on other options.

i have also had a dell latitude in the past[loooooong time ago] and its a good laptop too. i saw the XPS in circuit city the other day and i was impressed. it will come down to how much you want to spend...

one thing which i would mention is Dell has an excellent customer service which is very important to have. when i was researching on this [3 yrs ago], i had read on various websites that sony vaio does not have a really good customer service. i personally havent really had any experience with Sony's customer service since i never had a problem.

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

Yes and no. Dell XPS has more than one model remember that. 1330 is not a gamers notebook, but is a multi-talented multimedia equippment. Whereas 1530 differes only from the screen (I believe 15.5 inches are the spec) and is not available with WLED technology, thus the screen is heavier and bulky. Yet still not the gamers option.
The 17xx Series is actually perfect for gamers and is only recommanded for people, who use notebooks as a console.
So need to buy that one in her case.
What I really love about XPS. The fashioning of keys and front panel with aluminium. Awesome!

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

heart beat - I've had trouble with my Dell and I know a few other people that have also had problems with Dell. It's a good computer but there's probably a reason they have good customer service lol.

I checked out the Sony Vaio and the Dell XPS M1330 and I liked the Sony Vaio much better. I really didn't like the Dell XPS's keyboard and the touch pad was way too small even though there was plenty of space to make it a little bigger. The Vaio was nice, but I'm afraid to take the risk of buying it in pink with the design without having seen it in real life. They only had the plain silver one at the store. =\

Re: Buying a new laptop - suggestions pls.

Ask them to send you a sample :p

Just kidding....I'd go with Vaio regardless. As far as the color issue goes, either you'll like the pink that you get, or you'll just have a pink laptop that's great.

:) Good Luck!
