You can deff get a nice apartment in manhattan.. 4-5 bedroom apt. If you go out to Long island or westchester, or any of the four other boroughs (bx, bk, qns and si) you can get ALOT for that price.

They ask for 200K down payment (estimate) and monthly payments are 3-5000 depending on the interest rate, mortgage length etc (thats wat it says on yahoo real estate)

You can buy a 3 bedroom house in orange county, California with a million. It will be a few miles away from the beach. Orange county is at number 2 or 3 in USA in terms of living standards.
Keep going closer to the beach and keep adding money in your million.

Yes, you should be able to get a pretty decent place for 1 mill.

As PA has pointed out earlier, get in touch with a real estate agent (I used to be one a few years back), they have access to listings on the MLS’s site’s restricted section (http://www.mls.com/) where there are exclusives. If anyone’s interested in Long Island let me know, i know some good agents here.
