I want to invest in a good camera… but i dont know which one to buy and what are the things to look for in a camera when you are buying one.
I am willing to spend around $400 - $600 …
right now i am also not sure what kind of photography i am in but most probably i would like to do portraits and nature photography… maybe some still photography too …

DSLR stands for Digital Single Lens Reflex camera and gives you a lot more flexibility in shot composition in terms of lighting, depth of field etc. Point & shoot is the more commonly used cameras where you just point & shoot !!
I am guessing that you are probably in the market for a point & shoot. You should easily be able to get a good one for under $ 300 in the US.
Canon Powershot & Nikon Coolpix are both good cameras. They have multiple models for each.

other wise i would recommend a nikon/canon/sony cybershot
pik and shoot camera
my friend got a sony cybershot 8.0 mege pixel camera recently i was amazed by the quality of it
but i m still happy with my nikon coolpix 5200 s mp camera 
outstanding picture quality with nikon and cybershot cameras :k:

The Canon EOS Rebel/Digital Rebel are good and should be in your price range.
