BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

When Majeed asks Butt to bat out a maiden over, Butt replies "Just leave it bro".

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

10-2 verdict reached among jurors apparently since there couldn't be a unanimous decision. Seems like it will be guilty for both. We'll find out in the coming hours for sure

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

They didnt announced the verdict yet

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

Pardon my lack of knowledge about UK's laws but why did the judge asked for 'unanimous' verdict to start with? and why now he has allowed 10-2 verdict? why it cant be simple majority verdict (5-7) ?

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

Yeah I thought of the same thing last Friday. A judge should have better judgement than that for crying out loud

LONDON: The judge presiding over the fixing trial of former Pakistan cricketers Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif sent the jury home Monday in hope they can reach a majority decision.**

The jurors will report back to south London’s Southwark Crown Court at 10 a.m. (1000 GMT) Tuesday after judge Jeremy Cooke said he would accept a 10-2 verdict on whether the pair plotted the deliberate bowling of no-balls during the fourth test against England at Lord’s in August 2010.
The jury initially retired at midday Thursday but reported to Cooke on Monday that it was unable to reach a unanimous decision on charges of conspiracy to cheat and conspiracy to accept corrupt payments.
”If you are unable to reach a unanimous verdict on any particular one of the counts then I can take a majority decision from you, which is one on which at least 10 of you agree,” Cooke told the jury.
Cooke previously told the 12 jurors to accept that bowler Mohammad Amir was also involved.
The allegations originally surfaced after sports agent Mazhar Majeed was recorded by an undercover reporter working for the now-defunct News of the World tabloid saying that the three Pakistan players had accepted money to fix betting markets.
Majeed was secretly filmed accepting 150,000 pounds ($242,000) in cash from the journalist.
Prosecutors allege that Butt, who was test captain at the time, and fast bowler Asif conspired with Majeed to ensure the delivery of three intentional no-balls during the match between Aug. 26-29.
Butt said he had ignored the requests from Majeed, his agent, and Asif said he had only bowled the no-ball at precisely the time Majeed said it would be delivered because Butt had told him to run faster moments before bowling.
Butt, Asif and Amir have already received lengthy suspensions by an International Cricket Council anti-corruption tribunal in Doha for fixing parts of the Lord’s test.
Butt was banned for 10 years, five of which are suspended, Amir was banned for five years and Asif was given a seven-year ban, with two suspended.

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

^ Allah karey yee judge Jamaica k commissioner jaisa na ho....

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

Pakistani media is reporting that jury has received verdict on one charge. But is stuck on the other.

Two charges were 1) to cheat and 2) accept corrupt payments.

I would assume jury has reached a decision on 2 considering notes were found but they are undecided on 1). Hmm...

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

but none of the currency was found in Asif’s room… :chai:

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

If Asif and Salman are not renting the suites, they by now have at-least 19 (19 days of trial) wonderful outfits. Both are turning in smartly dressed everyday.

I am just wondering if they have hired any PR firm to advise on every step (from dressing to statements) which is not uncommon here in US and Canada.

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

I have said it previously. Butt's lawyer is just superb. And lawyers do have a PR team too ... big firms i mean.

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

Yes the lawyer is enjoying some of the loot Butt received form Mazhar Majeed. I however don't agree that his lawyer was superb.

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

^ Ehsan bhai, as much as I believe Butt is guilty... His lawyer has made the jury think for so long.. that is a BIG achievement. And no unanimous decision either.

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

That could be any number of factors including Asif's defence. I think Asif has got more of a chance to get acquitted than Butt.

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

hang the scum bags thats what i say - they are no better than the rapists and murderers out there - they treat their sport , fans and country like pros!!

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

but why janab?

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

Take it easy ... it's just a sport. Don't diminish the gravity of rape and murder by equating this with those heinous crimes.

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

Both scumbags have been found GUILTY. Thank God for the UK justice system.

Butt found guilty on both charges**

A jury found former Pakistan captain Salman Butt guilty of both charges in the spot-fixing trial, while fast bowler Mohammad Asif was found guilty on one charge, after they took 16 hours and 56 minutes to debate the verdicts.

The judge, Justice Cooke, then retired the jury to deliberate further on the second count against Asif. Both players will remain on bail until sentencing on Thursday and Friday.
Butt and Asif were unanimously found guilty on the charge of ‘conspiracy to cheat’ and Butt was guilty by a 10-2 majority on the charge of ‘conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments’ following the Lord’s Test in August last year when they allegedly conspired with agent Mazhar Majeed, teenage fast bowler Mohammad Amir and other people unknown to bowl pre-determined no-balls.
Butt, wearing a velvet jacket and shirt without a tie, showed no emotion as the verdicts were read out. He just stared at the jury stony-faced. Asif, wearing a grey winter coat in the dock, was equally unmoved as neither player said a word or made any obvious facial expression.
The jury were unable to reach a verdict on the "accepting corrupt payments’ charge in relation to Asif, and Justice Cooke immediately retired them to deliberate some more in case they could reach a verdict on that fourth charge.
Butt and Asif denied the charges. The maximum prison sentence for the acceptance of corrupt payments is seven years in jail. Butt’s wife is due to have a caesarean section on Tuesday, as they expect a second son.
