BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

Re: Spot-fixing trial begins in London/ Three further Pakistani players named.

I am not saying that I want him to get away, but if he gets away from the court of law, chances of ICC's punishment to stand in sport's arbitration court will be next to nill. Only way then will be ICC twisting PCB's arm not to include Asif (just like in case of Danish and Shoaib malik)

Re: Spot-fixing trial begins in London/ Three further Pakistani players named.

Thats Pathetic

Re: Spot-fixing trial begins in London/ Three further Pakistani players named.

agreed, I think Asif is going to get away with it, Amir obviously has done a deal with the prosecutors so he might get away with a suspended sentence while Butt will be in jail. I hope he gets put away for the full 7 years.

Re: Spot-fixing trial begins in London/ Three further Pakistani players named.

There really is no direct evidence against both Butt and Asif. Amir and Majeed did not testify in the court. The video recording of Majeed is not a statement under oath and can not be taken as entirely true. He could just be lying and boasting as a habit. I am surprised none of the defense attorney objected to the admissibility of the video as evidence against Butt and Asif (it could be used against Majeed). I am also surprised the defense attorney did not question the authenticity of the video. There is no recorded transaction between Majeed and Butt and Asif that proves a criminal conspiracy. I think both Asif and Butt should be acquitted.

However, not enough evidence for criminal conviction does not mean these guys are innocent and there is enough circumstantial and heresay evidence to ban them by ICC.

Re: Spot-fixing trial begins in London/ Three further Pakistani players named.

Butt should definately be in jail but I dont like the thought of Asif getting away with it either - his whole career has been filled with criminal activities, drugs, etc and it would be pathetic if he gets to walk away with fixing matches.

Re: Spot-fixing trial begins in London/ Three further Pakistani players named.

Amir's ban had earlier been extended by 1 year by the ICC (because of the violation... he played in a club game in England). Maybe with his plea deal he can come back in another year or so.

Re: Spot-fixing trial begins in London/ Three further Pakistani players named.

As far as I remember he was warned …

Didn't they use marked notes?

Re: Spot-fixing trial begins in London/ Three further Pakistani players named.

yes they did and part of those marked notes were found in Butt's and Aamir's room.

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

This punishment will be different from ICC's but it surely will impact ICC's ruling.

Jury retires to consider verdict Richard Sydenham at Southwark Crown Court

The judge presiding over the alleged spot-fixing trial at Southwark Crown Court involving Pakistan players Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif has retired the jury to decide upon verdicts.
Justice Cooke completed his summing up at about midday on Thursday, the 17th day in the trial, and offered some guidance to the 12-person jury who will decide the fate of the two players.
“The only satisfactory verdict in a criminal trial is a unanimous verdict,” the judge said. “I do not want to hear anything about majority decisions at the moment.” The judge may consider a majority verdict, though, should there not be a decision within several days.
He added: “There is no set time for a verdict. You can take as short a time or as long a time as you need within reason. There is no pressure on you. If you do not reach a decision today, I shall send you home and you can come back tomorrow.”
Former captain Butt and pace bowler Asif face charges of conspiracy to cheat, and conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments, following the Lord’s Test in August last year when they allegedly conspired with agent Mazhar Majeed and teenage fast bowler Mohammad Amir and other people unknown to bowl pre-planned no-balls. Butt and Asif deny the charges.

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

The jury has asked to hear the phone conversation between Majeed and Butt again. This is good news for Butt, because it means the jury is not entirely convinced of his guilt. And in those phone conversations, there's nothing to incriminate him.

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED

I dont know how you can deduce that there was nothing incriminating in those messages.

The jury deciding on the alleged spot-fixing trial at Southwark Crown Court involving Pakistan players Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif were sent home for the weekend on Friday afternoon having failed to reach a verdict after two days of deliberation.
The judge, Justice Cooke, released the jury at just after 4.00pm on the 18th day of the trial. They will resume for a third day of deliberations on Monday morning at 10.00am. The jury were issued with the customary details from the judge about not discussing the case with anyone outside of the jury room.
Asif’s lawyer Alexander Milne QC also stood to inform the judge that the two players had been issued with emergency 14-day visa extensions as their existing ones were due to expire at midnight on Monday.
The jury did come back into court at 12.20pm but only to listen to recorded transcripts for about half an hour. They listened to two recordings.
The first was of a telephone conversation between agent Mazhar Majeed and the undercover journalist on the evening of August 20,** with Butt heard on speaker phone**. And also a call on the morning of August 21 when Majeed spoke to the journalist in person at his Croydon home, **and also rang Butt again during that conversation. Majeed was trying to ask Butt to bat out a maiden over, which he did not subsequently do **
The jury went ‘out’ at about midday on Thursday when the judge told them then: “The only satisfactory verdict in a criminal trial is a unanimous verdict. I do not want to hear anything about majority decisions at the moment.” The judge may consider a majority verdict, though, should there not be a decision within several days.
He added: “There is no set time for a verdict. You can take as short a time or as long a time as you need within reason. There is no pressure on you. If you do not reach a decision today, I shall send you home and you can come back tomorrow.”
