But at least we are not Dubai..

take care :)

Can I ask one humble question?

You were born there and you are heating up on this conversation? Why you call yourself Pakistani? (I wont accept such answers because my parents were pakistani, any other solid reason)

I guess I should also re-quote my reply to the thread of Dubai Labor

oh so i'm not a pakistani?

kool. u learn something new everyday.

shoot me for asking for a lil bit of respect from ppl when talking about other people or other countries.

If its ok with u guys when someone talks BS about pakistan then who am i to interfere. my apologies. Allah he haafiz.

BBQ, it was a bit harsher from aaho.. but what he meant was not to hurt anyones feelin..

as Pakistanis we have responsibilities no matter whereever we live..

no one can take ur nationality from U.. nor ur roots can be torn apart..

stay..

Sheikh ya’booti?

Re: But at least we are not Dubai..

I find it a great read not because he is dissing Dubai but because of what he is trying to convey through it, look at the bigger picture. a simple reminder for those pakistanis who worship consumerism and capitalism as the ultimate luxury, for them to count their blessings still and cherish our distinct identity, heart and soul of our robust cities and “celebrate our cultural, religious, linguistic plurality and richness” because these things are fast becoming a rarity in the developed world :k: they seem to be lost in a cloning maze. its commendable that being a foreigner he knows our strengths better than we do.

Re: But at least we are not Dubai..

rightly said :)

Re: But at least we are not Dubai..

agree with the dude.

i've always called this place schizophrenic. or if you will, this place has multiple personalities.

the malls are getting huge, and people are flocking to it. but there is not a single decent library here. i am frustrated when i want to study because i don't know where to go to study. go to starbucks? how is that a great study place. H&M will be a huge ass store, but a bookstore would be a tiny khoka, if it's present. money's spent on making building pretty, but there isn't any real money spent on connecting the different emirates. the abaya's there, but it's like just another fashion accessory. most of the time i see people of other nationalities heading to the masjid, but hardly ever locals.

The article makes some legitimate points. In the lust to have the biggest, best, most expensive of everything, Dubai is trying to out-do other cities, without looking for it’s own distinct identity.

The disrespect for the call to namaaz really surprised me. I thought that a predominantly Muslim country should exhibit a certain deference - boy was I mistaken!

Re: But at least we are not Dubai..

khumar what are you doing in dubai. i thought you were canadian

Re: But at least we are not Dubai..

lolx ravage.. Khumar's location says (in ur brain).. so ur brain is canadian? :@:

This is very true and the same disrespect during salaah time goes on in the islamic republic of pakistan. So I don't see the difference there.

In Riyadh, however, everything shuts down at salaah time and every muslim is expected to (and they do) go n pray.

Now*** I see the difference...

Re: But at least we are not Dubai..

shukar.. kaheen to difference mila.. :)

jahan difference mila.. waheen se compare ker do ;)

Re: But at least we are not Dubai..

saudies are a completely different kettle of fish. pompous, consumerist, self righteous, obscenely rich.

the only sane place in the gulf is Oman. bus.

^ there's always 2 sides to a coin.

This is not something saudi-dislikers would like to hear but the time me and my family spent in KSA was truly the most beautiful time of our lives and we would go back any day. I intend to, Inshallah.

All the politics can rest aside, all i know is that KSA is one of the few countries that shows respect for Azaan and thats all I need to know.

Again you are getting heated up I just ask it as I want to ask why you call yourself Pakistani. Any answer?

^ no one's getting heated up, i'm in my bed listening to music, nibbling away on chocolate, i'm cool as ice.

And I consider myself a pakistani because i remember my roots and because two pakistanis brought me into this world, and because my passport says so. :)

I'm not gonna cry if u tell me i ain't a pakistani. its kool.

Oh BTW I was BORN, RAISED and spent 16 years of "strange" life in UAE. Count Dubai (Sharjah, Ajman), Abu Dhabi, Alain, And all Western Areas of Abu Dhabi in. So I have seen more worst that what the reporter observed in few months.

Oh one thing good about Gulf (heard it from a friend who live in Kuwait).. Aankh main Aanso Munh main Rait.. Haza Kuwait Haza Kuwait :D

I dont dispute that some people can like it. im sure it has some redeeming properties, like the respect for azaan as you mention.
