Karachi airport may be the busiest overall, but 70% of PIA flights operate out of Lahore and Islamabad combined. Karachi has no US flights anymore…not sure if they have any european flights. They have a limited number of mideast flights. Foreign airlines have a bigger presence there than PIA.
When Nawaz Sharif began the open skies policy for Lahore airport, it was meant to attract foreign airlines and investment, coupled with the building of a bigger airport, with a hangar in order to accommodate repairs for PIA aircraft. This was one of his better plans that I appreciated. But it fell apart after Musharraf took over, and the size of the airport was reduced to half, no hangar was built, and PIA HQ was not shifted to Islamabad, thanks to MQMs pressure.
