HMCQ: if I could write in chinese I would pal. I am thinking english is beyond you. :)
If you are applying for a position in investment banking. No one gives a rats ass what minor you have. You will learn whatever Marketing 101 or economics 102 crap you learned within the three week training program.
What will help you is a degree from a top twenty school. I will hire a guy out of U of Chicago with a MAJOR in English way before I would hire someone from South Arkansas State Universtiy with honors in Finance.
it's about pedigree...that;s why on job opportunities in the NYTimes or WSJ you will see that recruiters specify Top 20 schools. Not business minors.
Hope this clears it up for you.
CH
In your experience I am sure that is the case. I have seen it otherwise, where a non top 20 person beat the top 20. Depends to a large extent on your network and connections.
Yes on paper a top 20 looks way better then a regular else where, but I have seen plenty of cases (in I banking specifically) where pedigree was less important then quality. Does that mean its a trend? no. Does that mean its possible. Definately yes.
Since the question was not about I Banking but just general business, I would add yes it helps to have the minor.
I being a to-be computer engineer might find myself applying for a position where i have to manage a project. This position could be as a project leader, supervisor or whatever. It could be for anything relating from developing a software or designing an x,y,z motor system to study some frequency effects; WHICH is all related to my field.
it should however be noted that all these positions require leadership, management, organizational and other similar skills which apparently business courses tend to offer or train you for.
i personally think that i have plenty of experience which helped me to improve my business skills over the course of time BUT if i apply for such a position and the recruiter ends up with my and another person's resume; with the only difference of that sentence saying "minor"........ go figure!
also someone mentioned if he had to chose b/w a business minor and somebody from a top 20 uni. first i assume that he is looking for somebody with soley a business background, so he obviously would not want an engineer.
now, assuming that the recruitment is for an engineering position; and both the potential canditates are from top 20 uni's and have quite similar academic and professional backgrounds; with the exception of you know what. anybody can guess what the outcome would be then......
i don't think if i need to go into any further detail; though i wasn't expecting to ramble that much either.
b/w i thought business majors have to take some PR courses to!!
