At least where my family comes from, the bride's mother's clothes are supposed to be a little more toned down compared to those of the other guests.

yea even if they arent told out right... there is strong social pressure on the mother of the bride to dress plain, it kinda sucks actually

the only good thing in the wedding is the groom...
the dresses are all yucky

Why?
I'm not really sure...I think its because she's supposed to be sad to see her daughter go? But I've definitely been to a couple of shadis where the bride's mother was dressed in a heavy outfit, and all the aunties would be talking about how inappropriate it was.
I know when my sister got married, our mom just wore a plain kaccha silk sari with a little embroidery of the same color. It looked nice...but it was definitely simpler than what all the other guests were wearing.

i disagree with this whole thing, common now i know that the mother is sad to let her daughter goo.... why dress up plain, i mean as long as its age appropriate and decent anything goes thats the way i see it :),
I am prepping for my wedding and i asked the video guy to show me a sample of the wedding movie hez made, in one of them the groom's mom was wearing a red lehnga on the shadi...UNBELIEVABLE...

Two weddings I wetn to, the mother dressed up very nicely, hair done, makeup, jewelery, kaam-walay kapray etc...
my mom always had very simple taste with clothing and everything else..it was wat she felt comfortable in, not what others told her to waer
